Kate stood by the front gate of her home. The sun beat down on her skin while she constantly checked the time on her cell. Any minute now. Wearing a slightly above the knee sundress, her porcelain legs peeked out the bottom, then ended in a pair of white wedges. She was taking her daughter out for ice cream as soon as she arrived home from school. It was Kayley's first day of sixth grade and Kate was eagerly awaiting the bus to bring her home. Kayley was all kinds of excited this morning for her first day. Kate took about a dozen pictures at the very same gate she was standing in front of now. Her son Andrew was another story. He wouldn't be caught dead posing for a picture, especially for his mother. He was a freshman in high school now. Mr. Big Shot. Mr. Too Cool For Parents. One of his friends picked him up for school and Kate imagined he wouldn't be in a hurry to get home. She wasn't quite sure where she went wrong with that one, but all she could do was deal with him later.... or have his father deal with him.
Speak of the devil, a Range Rover was now pulling into the drive and parking at the end of it. Jagger. Of course, he wouldn't miss this moment. He never missed any moments. He practically raised Kayley as his own and it was only natural that he showed up to greet her from the bus. As always, he looked incredibly handsome. Kate figured after so many years, she'd get used to his good looks. Nope. He still made her turn her head.
"Should be getting here any minute." she said, looking down at her phone to check the time again and to get the camera ready.

"She looked pretty excited this morning, huh?" Jagger commented as he climbed out of the car and walked towards Kate, giving her quick smile. "Thanks for sending me the pictures, by the way. She looked cute as a button."
he he felt bad not being there that morning to watch Kayley heading off to school, but he had been booked for an early morning interview. He had made sure to give her a shoutout live on air though, which he knew she would fine pretty damn cool. His little monkey. Christ, he loved that girl. He didn't even think about the fact that she wasn't really his daughter anymore and even at school, she was known as Kayley St. Croix.
"got a text from Andy earlier," he added, coming to stand next to her. "he said he was going to Jax's after school for a swim with some friends. I figured he probably didn't bother telling you."

Kate had to laugh, "Yea, I'm sure he did." Andy had become such a handful in the past year alone. She wanted to blame it on puberty and the hormones. It made her feel better about it. He could be a little shit to his father at times as well, but he still seemed to favor him more than her and that was something Kate resented.
"I'll have to text him later to remind him that his curfew is now back in effect with school starting back up." She glanced over at Jagger, giving him a smile, "That boy reminds me more of you every single day, I swear. He took off this morning in his chucks and black pants. I about died." she added, shaking her head.

Jagger laughed, "he looks exactly like me at his age. Mom sent me a picture from my freshman year and its crazy the resemblance!" And the little shit acted exactly like he did as well, which wasn't always so great. For the most part, he and Andrew had a pretty great relationship but there were times he could happily throttle the kid. For fucks sake, the attitude!
"thank god for Kayley, eh?" He shook his head as he glanced up the street to check on the bus, shifting his weight from foot to foot. It had been 5 years since he had moved out of his house, but it was still slightly awkward whenever he returned to the place he had bought for his family but now didn't even live in. He looked at Kate and couldn't help but check her out. His baby mama had aged pretty damned good and he would have had to be dead to not notice it. It was just too bad that she had been so distrustful of him in the end.
"so...ah..." He stuck his hands in his pockets. "I wonder how Kay's first day went."

"Well, if I know our daughter like I know I do, she probably made five new best friends AND became the teacher's favorite." Kate responded with a laugh. Eventhough Kayley was obviously not Jagger's biological child, Kate still referred to her as his. He was there since she was a baby and Kate couldn't have been more blessed. Especially when her real father, Brett Ellis, wanted absolutely nothing to do with her, and even insisted she wasn't his. It still disgusted her whenever it crossed her mind, but then she thought of Jagger and how things worked out the way they were meant to.
She was just stealing a glance in Jagger's direction when she heard the sounds of the bus coming around the corner. Gripping her phone, Kate smiled widely and started walking toward the end of the drive. "Here she comes!"
A long yellow bus slowed down and came to a complete stop in front of Kate's house. It took a minute before the door opened and a blonde ten year old came bouncing out, all smiles. "Mom! Dad!" She waved at the bus, obviously to her friends, before running toward her parents.
Kate caught her first. "Baby! Oh my Gosh, how was your day??" She squeezed her and planted a kiss to her cheek.

"It was sooo good, mommy!" Kayley exclaimed, jumping into her mother's hug. "I'm in the same class as Lexie AND we get to sit together! This year is going to be so awesome!"
Jagger reached out and took Kayley's backpack from her to lighten the load and waited for his turn to greet his daughter. It was timed like these, these milestones which could make him sad for what could have been. Yes, he was always included in major events and for all they went through, he and Kate were doing pretty good at the whole co-parenting thing, but still. Not being there for the day to,day stuff, it bothered him.
kayley's blue eyes turned to Jagger and she grinned up at him, propelling herself into his arms. "Daddy!" She yelled as his arms closed around her and he lifts her up. Sure, she was 10. She definitely wasn't a little girl anymore, but when he looked at her, he still saw that little baby gazing up at him. " I heard you on the radio on the bus this morning. Everyone was sooo jealous when they heard my name. It was so cool!"
jagger er grinned and gave her a squeeze. "I'm glad, baby. I'm sorry I couldn't be here to see you off this morning. I missed you." He told her. "What do you think about going out to supper tonight, hmm? Anywhere you want to go." He glanced up at Kate. "You too, mom."

Kate's eyes suddenly widened as Kayley released her dad quickly up at her in surprise. She loved spending time with both mom and dad. It didn't happen that often so when it did, it felt like Christmas to her. "Oh mom, can we??"
Not feeling as though she even had a choice, Kate just laughed, "Why are you even asking me?" she said, "You know I can't say no to that face of yours." She leaned down and gave her another kiss. "I guess we can get ice cream after. Let's take this inside." she said, reaching to take Kayley's bookbag from Jagger. "I'll just go in and grab my purse."
Minutes later, they all climbed into Jagger's car. Kayley was giving them an earful from the backseat. Kate kept exchanging glances with Jagger, giving him an amused smile. "So, then what happened?" she asked.
"Oh my gosh, so he tried to pry open the packet of italian dressing... and it just spilled everywhere! It even got on the teacher's shoe!" The car filled with laughter as she continued to give the play-by-play on her first day of school. It wasn't long before they were parking and heading inside of Kayley's all-time favorite restaurant, Sakura.
The three of them were seated rather quickly, as the dinner rush hadn't yet begun to roll in just yet. Kayley sat between her parents and picked up her menu. "I just want some sushi and some rice!" Kate shook her head, "This is your dinner. So you will need to eat a lil more than that, girl."

"Aw, c'mon Kate, it's a special day. Let her eat whatever she wants this time," Jagger laughed, shaking his head at Kate. He knew she was a stickler for keeping the kids healthy and in a schedule, and jagger was usually on board with that but he was a lot more lenient at times than Kate was. He figured that was just a mother kind of thing. "she can eat all healthy tomorrow. Let her enjoy this."
He he gave her a quick smile to assure her he wasn't just being an ass. He had told Kayley she could go anywhere she wanted to eat, and had it just been the two of them as was the original plan, he'd have let her enjoy herself this one day.
"yeah, c'mon Mom. I promise I will eat anything tomorrow, just let me have this tonight, pleeease..." Kayley begged, jumping on Jagger's bandwagon. "I promise, I really do!"

Kate's eyes met Jagger's and she gave him that 'I'm gonna so kick your butt later' look. "Alright, sweetie. But ONLY because it's a special occasion...and not because your dad said you could." she added with a wink to Jagger.
Kayley's smile grew bigger. "Thanks, mom!" She then stuck her nose in the menu and started to pick out the different sushi rolls she wanted.
Once their food was ordered, Kate sat quietly, moving her straw around in circles in her ice water, just listening to her daughter and her father go back and forth. She found herself wondering where Andy was and if he would be home at a decent time tonight. She thought about texting him but let it go. That boy was going to make her develop premature wrinkles.
"So, my best friend Lexie goes to this really cool dance school. Do you think I can take classes too??"

Jagger was listening to Kayley, but he was also watching Kate as well. Her mind was definitely somewhere else and he frowned slightly to himself, taking a wild stab in the dark in regards to what was on her mind. Andrew. He was definitely going through a defiant stage and unfortunately, Kate seemed to get the brunt of it despite his trying to get through to their son.
"want me to text him?" He asked, Knowinghe didn't need to elaborate on who he was tasking about. From what he could get out of Andy, or at least put together from things he said, Andy was still mad about their breakup 5 years ago. Jagger got it. Andy had been 10 and so excited that his parents were getting married and then...well, then the magazine came out and Kate sort of...well, in Jagger's opinion, Kate went loco and everything just blew the fuck up. Andy blamed his mother.
his mind was drawn back to Kayley when she asked about dancing and Jagger shrugged his shoulders, glancing at Kate. "I don't see why not," he answered. True, he should have probably waited for Kate to answer, but he was so used to just acting like Kayley's dad, it was rare he ever remembered he actually really wasn't.

Kate looked up when Jagger directed hia attention to her. "Hmm? Oh! No, dont bother him. Hes probably just skateboarding or hangin at the pool with his friends. He's old enough to celebrate on his own now." Who was she kidding? It literally broke her heart that her little boy waa not so little anymore...and not so much hers. He made his feelings known on more than one occasion and he completely blamed Kate for his parents breaking up. Kate wasn't sure how else to make it up to him rather than just giving him space.
She then turned to Kayley, "Dance, huh? I think that we could at least check it out." If Kayley wanted to dance...well then she'd dance. There really wasn't much her parents wouldn't do for her.

"Awesome! thanks mom, thanks dad," Kayley exclaimed, giving both of her parents a grin. She turned her attention to her food then, having gotten what she wanted.
jagger looked over at Kate and smirked a little before digging into his own meal. They were interrupted a few times by random people coming to their table, asking Jagger for pictures and for the most part, he was pretty good about it. Over the years, he managed to accept hoe his life was, but there were still times where it took everything he had not to be a total ass to them when they interrupted him. Especially when he was with his family. Or when he caught wind of someone being rude to Kate about the end of their relationship, which had played out in the tabloids for everyone to have an opinion on. There were a few fans who he had out right told to fuck off in those days.
when the meal was finished, Jagger paid the bill and led the others to his car. "So, did they stick you with homework Kay?" He asked, starting the car and heading back towards their house.

Kate sat in the front passenger seat, feeling full and ready for a nap. She still had to take Kayley to get ice cream. The idea made her regret eating as much as she did. Still, the food was amazing and the company was even better. She liked the way her and Jagger's relationship was right now. Sure there were times when she wished things had been different, but overall, she couldn't ask for more. He was there for her and the kids anytime she needed him.
"Nope!" Kayley exclaimed proudly from the backseat. "All we did today was go over all the rules and blah blah blah...."
Kate's thoughts were interrupted and she let out a small laugh, "I'm sure it was a lil more than 'blah blah blah' Kayley Marie."

"When did you become such a mom, Kate?" Jagger asked with a laugh, glancing at her out of the corner of his eye. "Remember when you used to be all, blah blahblah? That doesn't seem so long ago, does it?"
"dad, that was, like, in medieval times!" Kayley spoke up befor putting her head back down to her iPhone.
Jagger burst out laughing at that, pulling into the driveway. "Kayley, your mom isnt that old. I'm older than she is, so I would have to be ancient!"
"well, you're kinda old too, dad. No offence."
jagger out the car into idle and shook his head. "Taken down by a 10 year old. I never thought it would come to this."

Kate laughed hard as she unbuckled her seatbelt. Her daughter never missed a beat. Always quick with the comebacks. Sometimes she wondered if she got that from her Uncle Wes. "You know you can't argue with her." she said to Jagger, flashing him a bright smile. "You lose every single time."
Kayley grabbed her backpack from the seat next to her. "Dad, are you gonna come in?" she asked, paying more attention to the screen in front of her than whether or not her dad was going to answer her.
Ignoring Kayley's question, Kate leaned her head against the headrest and looked over at Jagger, "Thanks for dinner."
