Ally had waited a significant amount of time before paying Adam a visit. She figured with the severity of his injuries and everything else, that he might not care to be bombarded with visitors. She was shocked when she heard about his accident and followed up on his recovery through the newspaper and television reports. Her mother had called her to make sure she did right and brought him flowers, even though she explained that guys didn't care about flowers. Mrs. Whitney didn't care what they liked, she cared about the Whitney image and she reminded Allison about the long standing friendship between them and the Prescotts.
So now Allison was standing in front of Kristen Buchanan's door, hoping that he was still there. If not, she would leave the flowers on the doorstep with her card. Pressing the buzzer, she waited, also hoping that she didn't have to speak to Kristen at all. Lord knew she wasn't one of her favorite people... and most likely vice versa.
A woman dressed in a white nursing uniform answered the door and Ally raised both brows. Wow. Kristen was going all out for Adam. "Yea... I'm here to see Adam." she said as she stepped inside. Carrying her flowers, Ally headed into the direction that the nurse gestured. Poking her head into the bedroom, Ally smiled, "Knock, knock."
Over the course of the last few weeks, Adam had spent a good bit of time thinking. He hated being alone when the nurses weren't there or when Kristen wasn't there. He hated the silence because it forced him to think. He tried to stay drugged up during that time so that he could sleep through it, but there were times when he didn't want that haze of sleep - times when he needed to think, needed to just feel again. He didn't like the person he had become over the course of the last 12 months or so. Kristen had been right. As irritating as it was to admit to - his friend had been right about him and his motivation to do what he'd done. And look what had happened? At the rate he was going, someone was going to end up dead. As much as Adam disliked Belle, he didn't wish her dead. He just wished she'd leave him alone. But he'd crawled into the marriage bed with her and as was par for the course, he was the one received the harshest karmic response. He was learning that the more you play with fire, the more you end up burned. It was a hard lesson...
The nurse was just finishing up his physical therapy and had just covered his legs with the sheet and blanket when they heard the knock on the door. His brow creased unsure about what to expect. He knew he didn't want to be laying down when whoever it was came in so he quickly asked the nurse to help him into a chair that was kept next to the bed. He was in the chair securely when the nurse finally made it to the door. She opened it and allowed Allison to come in. "I was just about to fix him some lunch. Would you like something to eat as well?"
Adam could see there door from where he was positioned and he smiled, "Hey, Allison. Please tell me you brought food from Lilas..." He laughed as he teased the nurse about his diet.
Ally stepped inside and her smile widened to see that Adam was keeping in good spirits. "Unfortunately, no..." she replied, "But uh... I brought you these!" She handed the bouquet of wildflowers out to him proudly, "Courtesy of the Whitney fam." She shook her head to the nurse that she wasn't hungry and then as she disappeared out of the room, Ally pulled a bottle of Jack Daniels from behind her back. "And this is from me."
Adam smiled and glanced at the flowers. "The flowers were a bit much," he didn't want to sound ungrateful. "Thank you...hmm," he eyed the Jack Daniels. "You realize the nurse won't let me enjoy that until well after the pain meds are discontinued. How about we set a date and we'll enjoy it together to celebrate?"
He cleared his throat and took a deep breath. He wasn't sure what to talk about at this point. He hadn't really had many visitors and he didn't know really want someone visiting might want to talk about.
Ally laughed and shoved both the flowers and Jack Daniels into his lap. "Hey, you can thank my mother for the hideous flowers." she said, then claimed an empty chair, "I told her men could care less but you know how she is. She insisted. Maybe you can give them to Kristen, ya know, as a thank you or whatever." She crossed her legs and looked around, taking in the room, "Jesus... how long are you gonna be stuck here?"
He tried to concentrate on getting his arms and hands where they needed to be but he still had some swelling of his spinal cord. Adam looked at her a little confused when she put everything in his lap, "Allison...you can't put that there..." he tried to warn her as the flowers slid off of his lap.
His brow tensed and he prepared to hear the Jack Daniels follow but apparently Allison was pretty quick when she needed to be. The nurse returned a short time later with a bowl of hot soup. It actually smelled good. He still hadn't been allowed to eat anything really solid yet until they were sure that everything was going to actually work.
The nurse smiled at Allison, "Did you want the honors? Maybe he'll take it better from you."
Ally caught the bottle before it could crash to the floor and stuffed it underneath his pillow before the nurse could see it as she re-entered the room. She set the flowers on the bed for the time being. "Really?" she asked, looking from the nurse to Adam, and back again. "You're asking me if I wanna feed him?" She couldn't help but smirk, "Wow... I didn't realize how vulnerable you really were..." she teased as she took the bowl of soup from the nurse. She didn't find his condition the least bit funny but she was hoping that her light humor would make him feel better.
Scooting her chair closer, she sat down and blew on the soup as she stirred it around, "So, does she give you a bath too?" she asked after the nurse left them alone.
"Don't you wish you knew?" he rolled his eyes slightly but he wasn't really irritated at her. "Just start scooping...and blow on it would you? I think she makes it too hot on purpose." He was kidding around with the last comment, "you know just so she can wipe up any messes in my lap."
"Adam Prescott. Never thought the day would come that you would ask for a blow from me." Allison joked as she scooped up some soup and placed the spoon to his lips. "So, how's it going here anyway?" she asked, "I mean, besides the incredible service you get from the nurse..."
"You're a big girl now, no reason to hold back," he smirked slightly. His thoughts were all over the place. Maybe it was this feeling of being trapped unfairly in his body that made him ache to be able to pin a woman to a mattress. He couldn't remember the last time he'd done that...wait, yeah, he could. Damn, Belle Whitney.
He moved his shoulders to give him the right angle to sip the soup out of the spoon she offered to his lips. He wasn't entirely sure he was comfortable with being spoon fed by the girl who's sister had tried to have him killed. "Kristen and Tyler have been really good to me," he smiled but the smile seemed to fall just below his eyes. He'd been dealing with a lot of regret since he'd been confined to nothing more than his thoughts.
Why hadn't he seen before how incredible Kristen was? Maybe he had and hadn't been man enough to let her know. Either way she was happily married to a good guy and Adam wasn't inclined to disrupt a happy marriage. "Besides don't you know you shouldn't make offers you aren't prepared to follow through with?"
"Now, now.... you shouldn't act like a pig while I'm holding hot soup over your lap." Ally said with a tsk, tsk tone in her voice. She fed him another spoonful, "So, she's been pretty cool, I take it? No stomping around like the bitch that she is?" she chuckled.
"Allison, there's no reason for you to be nasty," Adam's voice was calm. "Especially when Kristen was the only friend or family that has lifted a finger to help. It's not that I don't appreciate your visit, I do. But right now Kristen is the only family I've really got and I don't intend to hear anyone speak disparagingly about her regardless of her propensity to hold grudges."
Ally rolled her eyes and waved his comment off. She didn't come there to talk about the wicked witch of the west. "So what do the doctor's say?"
"They say it's going to take some time. I've gotten back some of my control but...damn, it's frustrating that it's not coming back as fast as I want it to," he explained.
"How are things with you and Lilas?" Maybe if he changed the subject to her, he wouldn't have to dwell on his own physical limitations.
Ally nodded, "Yea.. I can only imagine. Just hang in there though... things will get better, ya know."
She set the empty bowl of soup on the table next to her and leaned against the back of the chair, "It's going good." she said, "Busier than ever... and the second restaurant on the Cleopatra is doing even better." She looked at Adam and smiled, "When you're better, you should come check it out."
Adam smirked slightly, the confident look on his face in stark contrast to how he felt on the inside. "It is very nice, actually," the chuckle that rolled out of his mouth almost sounded like the carefree Adam. "I visited the Cleopatra a few days before leaving town for the race. Cassie and I spent a good bit of time at restaurant there. I was going to tell you how nice it was...but well you know how things happen."
Ally smiled, "Well, I'm glad you enjoyed yourself. I'm kinda giddy when it comes to Lilas II. I mean.... I kinda just took over the first restaurant from Lila, but this new one feels like it's more mine, ya know?"
He laughed lightly shifting his shoulders in an effort to shift himself, but proved to be little more than a shrug. "I wouldn't know a thing about being giddy, but I do understand how you feel when you know that something is yours...really yours." His smile was genuine as he watched her face light up. He questioned inwardly how it was that two people with the same two sources for DNA could end up so remarkably different.
"It's been really good to see you, Allison. I appreciate you stopping by...seems there aren't that many people who can handle this enough to actually visit," he offered her a soft smile. "I'm not trying to rush you off or anything. It'd actually be kinda nice if I had someone to watch Judge Judy with." He grinned knowing full well that watching Judge Judy had to take points off his man card. He couldn't help it...he liked a lady in charge and bold enough to call 'bullshit' when she saw it.
"Wow. Adam... you always seem to surprise me." she said, chuckling softly at him, "Who would have thought Adam Prescott would be a closet Judge Judy fan."
It felt good to laugh but god he wished he could feel his body. He needed to feel alive again. "Yes, well you are one of the few that knows this...so I expect you to keep it on the down low."
Still laughing, Ally smiled back at him with a wink, "Don't you worry. It'll be our lil secret."
Twenty minutes into the ridiculous show, Ally sat at the edge of her seat with her hand swinging in the air, "Seriously?? This chick is freakin WACKED! She's caught ON TAPE slashing the tires on that girl's car. And she's denying it??"
It was always amusing to Adam how much people tended to deny reality even when it was presented to them in full blown color. "I think sometimes these people tell themselves something enough that even in the face of the reality they are convinced what they've been telling themselves is still the truth."
"It's... amazing. Really." She said, shaking her head, "I mean...the victim was sleeping with her boyfriend. She had the motive RIGHT THERE."
Adam looked at her out of the corner of his eyes. "It's kinda crazy what we can lie to ourselves about isn't it?" he wasn't trying to dig at her - not in the slightest. Hell after Kristen, Allison might very well be his last friend.
"Speaking of lies..." she started as she cleared her throat, "I suppose my sister had her baby today."
"Congratulations, I'm sure the happy parents are ... happy," Adam looked at her wondering why on earth Allison felt the need to bring up this particular topic of conversation.
Allison tilted her head and looked at him, "You're telling me you never slept with her while you guys were together?" she asked, "Because I'm pretty sure she's got more than one possible sperm donor."
"We slept together...but not like it was that often and it certainly wasn't anywhere near as often as she was with whoever else she was with in the time she wasn't with me," Adam explained. "Besides, Colby was going to have a paternity test run as soon as the baby was born. If it were anything but him...I'm sure he would have let me know."
Ally nodded as she looked down at her lap. Of course Colby would find out for sure. He wasn't an idiot, and he surely couldn't trust Belle. That baby was more than likely his... and Allison knew what she had to do.
"Hey... you need anything?" she asked, looking over at him, "I should probably get going so you can rest, and I promised myself I'd make a pitstop at the Cleopatra this afternoon."
Adam would have shaken his head, but the bars holding his neck immobile prevented even the slightest of movement. "No, thank you," softly smiling at her, he finally let how tired he really was begin to show. It wasn't that she exhausted him, it was that he'd been up since she'd gotten there and his body wasn't used to being out of bed for such a long length of time.
"Thank you for coming by, Allison," Adam's voice was smooth and soft. "It means a lot that you'd stop by."
Ally hated leaving him when she wasn't sure if Kristen or Tyler were home, but she really had to get going. She got to her feet and hiked her purse up onto her shoulder. "Just take it easy, Adam." she said, "I'll come back if you'd like. Maybe next week?" She stood in front of him before kneeling to press her lips to his cheek. "Get better, ok?" Before his condition could bring a tear to her eye, she headed out. She wouldn't let him see her upset that way. He probably felt bad enough, he didn't need to see anyone cry for him.
