It had only been a little over a week, but to Jenn, it felt like months. Since her adult party at her place and the horrifying events during that resulted in her boyfriend pounding the life out of her little brother, Jenn had been a wreck. She kept expecting to hear from Sean... but he never called. He never came. He couldn't possibly have meant they were over, right? They weren't breaking up just because her brother knocked up Kate. What they had was much more deeper than that.
Jenn was a lost soul before meeting Sean at the park that day. She had basically given up on men and then he showed up, completely restoring her faith. In a way... he needed his own faith restored a little and Jenn felt she was able to do that for him. She loved him and wasn't going to continue to cry herself to sleep anymore. It was time she took matters into her own hands. Perhaps he was every bit of a mess that she was, and was hoping she would call or come over.
Yea, that was it.
With her head high, and actually feeling confident, she stepped onto the elevator and pressed his floor. Butterflies swarmed in her stomach. She was nervous, yet excited. She had missed him terribly. Her friends assured her that he just needed time to blow off steam... and Jenn had given him that. But enough was enough. She wanted to see him and start getting everything back on track.
Finally standing in front of his apartment, she took a deep breath before raising her hand to knock.
Sean had just finished his morning run and hadn't walked back into his apartment more than five minutes. His water bottle in hand still drinking and still wearing his running shorts and shirt. He wasn't expecting anyone this early but figured the knock sounded more like a friend's knock than a delivery guy or something else. Kristen hadn't returned and he honestly didn't think she would so he padded to the door, pulled it open, but stopped mid-sentence when he saw Jenn on the other side.
He stared at her, still taking a drink of his water. He pulled the water from his lips and stepped back to allow her entrance if she wanted to come in, "Jenn..."
Jenn's breath caught somewhere in her throat when her eyes fell on him. She missed him way more than she thought. He looked so hot standing there all sweaty from an obvious work out, or run. She stood there for a moment... trying to think of what to say. She had practically memorized a speech on the way over but somehow it was lost on her.
When he moved to let her in, she stepped inside. "Sean...." Her heart pounded in her chest as she turned to face him. "Sorry to just drop by like this. I know I should have called..."
Sean listened to her begin, "Jenn, it's okay. You don't have to call to come by and you certainly don't have anything to apologize for." He motioned toward the kitchen, "Can I get you something to drink?"
He shut the door behind her and then followed her inside.
Nothing could describe the relief she felt at hearing his words. Was he... forgiving her? She knew everything would be alright! He just needed some time to figure things out.
She smiled and took a step toward him, "No, I want to apologize. Sean... what I did was wrong. I didn't see it then but I do now. Honest to God, I had no idea he was coming but I should have made him leave the second he showed up. I just want us to go back to the way things were."
What the hell was he supposed to do? He didn't want to hurt Jenn. He loved her but it wasn't the same kind of love that he felt when he was with Kate. She was apologizing and she was so sincere. She was so good to him. Except for that one small thing called 'Brett Ellis'. He couldn't blame Jenn for her brother being the kind of guy that he was. It certainly wasn't her doing.
Things would never be the way they were but god, he was no good at this. She honestly didn't know Brett was going to be there and sure as hell she didn't know he'd be swinging his schlong for all the girls. "I should make us some coffee."
Jenn nodded with a soft smile as she moved to his kitchen table to have a seat. She propped her chin onto her hands as she watched him get the coffee going. "I really should have came earlier." she said after a moment, "I don't know about you but... I've been miserable the whole time."
He was thankful for the distraction of making coffee. Sean pulled a couple of coffee cups down while he waited on the coffee to brew, "I'm sorry that I ruined your party, Jenn." He WAS sorry that he'd upset her, but he wasn't sorry for flying off into Brett. The asshole deserved to have his ass kicked.
"I've really been busy...you know with school and things." His voice came across with a tinge of sadness to it.
"No... don't apologize. I suppose I should get used to people beating the crap out of Brett." she sighed. She almost felt disappointed that he hadn't mentioned that he spent many sleepless nights awake thinking of her. "I guess people need to learn their lesson. I'm just sorry you got involved. I never wanted that. But I'm not mad at you for stepping in and fighting for what you believe in." She took a deep breath before continuing, "He should man up and take care of what's his. I know that, Sean. Believe me when I say I've talked to him about it numerous times. I... I know Kate means a lot to you." she looked down at the table, not at all comfortable discussing her, "And I just want you to know that it's okay for you to stand up for her."
He slid into a chair and opened up a box of doughnuts. They weren't pastries like she made. He'd missed her and her incredible cooking, but that wasn't fair for him to string her along not after he'd fallen back into bed with Kate. He was in love with Kate and it didn't seem that was ever going to change no matter how badly she hurt him - she was the one he kept going back to. Maybe she was his soulmate or maybe she was his dating anti-christ.
Sean offered her a doughnut, "Just got these this morning..they aren't as good as anything you make but they're good." It was almost an excuse. He wasn't exactly comfortable talking to her about Kate especially with Jenn. "I know Kate hasn't made the best decisions, but she's a good person, Jenn. She didn't deserve to be treated the way Brett treated her."
Jenn wasn't hungry but she took a doughnut to be polite. She set it on a napkin in front of her and lightly picked away at it. With a nod, she said, "Yea... I know. I'm deeply disappointed in my brother for the whole thing. I mean...that could be my niece, ya know? If it is...I want her to be taken care of." She broke a piece from her doughnut and popped it into her mouth, "I didn't come here to talk about them though." she said, "I wanna talk about us. You and me." She looked up at him before adding, "I miss you."
Sean stood to get their coffee when he heard the coffee maker finish filtering the coffee into the pot. "I've missed you too, Jenn." It wasn't a lie, he had missed her just likely not in the same way he had missed Kate.
Returning to the table, he sat her cup of coffee in front of her and then joined her at the table and picked out a doughnut.
Jenn scooted the coffee mug closer to her and wrapped her hands around it, though she didn't attempt to sip its hot liquid just yet. "I think even Chester misses you." she laughed, her smile lighting up her entire face. She was so happy right now. Sitting there with Sean had her under the assumption that everything was going to be alright, and that they could fall back into the way they were before.
"So uh... you wanna do something later?"
Sean wanted to tell her that there wasn't going to be any going back to what it was before. That he couldn't do that to her...not after what happened because it was simply bound to happen again and again. As long as Brett was around - he'd seek out his sister from time to time and honestly, Sean wasn't sure that was something he really wanted to deal with.
"Jenn...the last thing I want to do is hurt you..." Before he could continue, there was a playful knock at the door. He raised a brow and stood, "Excuse me. Let me see who that is and I'll be right back." Quickly moving to the door, Sean opened it. Nothing could have prepared him for who was standing on the other side.
Immediately Kate attacked Sean with kisses. "Mmmm... I missed youuuuuu....."
Sean was quite literally taken by surprise. He kissed Kate back but carefully pushed her back slightly, "Kate...now's not really a good time." He tried to drop the hint that he wasn't alone.
She laughed and reached for the elastic holding up his gym shorts, "What? It's always a good time..."
Sean almost whimpered, "Seriously...Jenn is here and I'm trying to talk to her. She came over to apologize." His eyes gave her a pleading look to let him do this the right way. "Please, Kate? Let me talk to her first."
Kate didn't have a chance to bolt because within seconds Jenn was standing in the hallway, staring at the both of them with her mouth slightly hanging open. Her cheeks instantly reddened out of embarrassment for herself. What an idiot she was! She had been sitting there all smiles when Sean had obviously reunited with Kate and was too darn chicken to tell her.
"Oh...I see." she said, standing there awkwardly. "Hello Kate."
Kate never wanted to break them up, but the way Sean had put it, they had already broken up the night of the party. Sp right now, she was very confused. All this time she had assumed they were over. So why was she here and why did she look horrified to see Kate there? "Hi, Jenn."
Feeling her eyes burn, Jenn tried her hardest to keep her cool. This wasn't what she expected coming over here. As she stood quietly looking from one to the other, it all made sense why she hadn't received a single phone call all this time. It really was over and Sean hadn't been broken up about it at all. No... he couldn't wait to run back to his ex.
"Well... guess you got what you wanted." she said, moving to grab her purse, "Now you get to be Kayley's dad and you can all be just a happy little family."
If Sean could have willed the floor to open up into a deep dark chasm and swallow him up, he would have done it. In fact, his first thoughts were ~ Let me die...please...just let me die! ~ He took a deep breath and held up his hand, "Jenn..." What the hell was he supposed to say? He couldn't go to the old stand by - it's not what it looks like. Cause hell yes, it was what it looked like! Honesty...be honest. "Jenn, I tried to tell you. I wanted to tell you...THIS..." he indicated to the situation they were in now. "Wasn't supposed to happen like this..."
He felt a headache coming on, but he fell silent unable to think of a single thing other than that to say.
Jenn held her own hand up, "Don't." she said, shaking her head as her eyes welled up. "Don't you dare stand there and tell me how this was supposed to happen. Because where I come from... you're not supposed to do this to someone you love."
Kate started to speak but Jenn gave her a look that caused her to stop where she was. Damn. She had horrible timing today, but Kate was under the impression that the two of them had already been over. What the hell was going on? As she looked at Jenn... it sure as hell didn't look over for her.
"Or didn't you love me, Sean?" Jenn continued, "Was I just some... rebound? Someone to lick your wounds while your ex here shacked up with my brother?"
This seriously sucked. For a moment he contemplated feigning a heart attack, but figured either one of them would probably kick him for that even if he was really having one. "No, Jenn, I do still care about you...at one point, yes, I loved you. You were not a rebound relationship."
He steadied his gaze on Jenn, "When we broke up...I didn't expect that you'd come back. Brett is your brother and you were very clear that night at your place that he took priority so don't stand there and act like the only person hurt in all of this was you."
"Oh, so you hooking up with Kate the second we break up is my fault?" she demanded, "Did you for one minute to stop to think that maybe... maybe, I was a complete mess after you left my apartment? That maybe I threw my own brother out? The same brother that takes such high priority over you. You were just waiting for your excuse to leave!"
"And how long did it take you to call or to come by?! If you gave half a rat's ass you would have called ... you would have come by sooner." his brow furrowed. "You and I both know that as long as you were pandering to your brother we weren't going to work out. Not when everytime you took his side. YOU threw me out before you threw Brett out and made it look like I was the problem to all your friends. Do you honestly think we had a chance after that?"
Jenn scoffed, then gestured to Kate, "None of this would even be happening if you would get off your ass and make Brett take responsibility for his actions."
Kate's mouth fell open at the accusation, "Whoa, excuse me?"
"Yea...you heard me." Jenn said, "This stupid fight all started over Brett not doing what he's supposed to."
"Yea? And how is that my problem?" Kate demanded, folding her arms across her chest, "When I told him about the baby he completely denied being her father. What was I supposed to do?"
"Umm.. they're called lawyers, sweetie."
Kate was getting upset now. She was not liking the fact that the whole thing was being turned around on her. "Yea, well after your brother disrespected me with his name calling and other childish behavior... I didn't want him to have the privilege of knowing my daughter. She deserves better than that spineless prick."
Jenn's brows raised, "Now who's name calling?"
"I have to call em how I see em." Kate replied.
"Whoa! See? That right THERE, Jenn, is why we're done. Yet again you blame someone for not ensuring that Brett manned up. It's not Kate's place to make Brett be a man and behave responsibly. He's been doing this for years because YOU and the rest of your family have enabled him to walk away leaving you and Wes the responsibility of cleaning up after him."
"Don't talk about me and my family like you know us, Sean." Jenn replied with a scowl, "All you know if what she tells you." she gestured again to Kate. "But whatever. Kate's not to blame for any of it. She only has, what, two kids with two different guys?"
"That is not your business!" Kate spat out. God, she actually thought Wes' sister was a nice girl. Surely the claws had come out.
Sean raised his brow at Jenn. "What the hell is the matter with you?" he shook his head. "On second thought don't answer..seems to me that you and Brett have an awful lot in common aside from DNA. It's not ever a woman's place to make a man be a man." He clenched his jaw, "You're the one who had her own brother dancing full monty nude in front of her friends at a sex toy party...YOU, Jenn. No one else..."
Jenn stared in silence for a few moments, looking at the man she spent the past ten or so months with. How could he just let it go so easily down the drain? She thought they had something more than that, but apparently Kate beat her to the punch. "Well... if that's how you feel." she said, biting her bottom lip, "I guess that's it then." She swallowed hard and desperately wanted to leave but somehow it felt as if her feet were glued to the floor.
"Yeah, I think that's how it has to be, Jenn," he took a deep breath. If this was the right thing to do then why was it still so hard to do? "It was good for a while, but you know...once we realized that we had people in common, we should have known. Maybe we did and we just denied it for a while longer." He opened his door, "Come on I'll walk you to your car."
Kate couldn't help but feel bad. Sure, Jenn's words were mean and uncalled for, but she couldn't really blame her. How would she feel if things were the other way around? She watched as Sean softened and offered to walk her out. She couldn't help but think what a good man he was. Instead of lingering there in the awkward silence, Kate quietly returned to the kitchen to wait for Sean to come back.
Jenn nodded in silence, then quietly stepped out of the apartment with Sean right behind her. She was so hurt right now and instinctively the tears finally began to flow. "Umm... I guess I'll have Wes come by and pick up whatever things you've left behind at my apartment."
"It's okay, Jenn. I don't mind coming by to pick up my things. Just let me know when a good time for you would be," he hated that she was so obviously upset. He moved his hand to the small of her back, "Jenn, I'm sorry...for what it's worth...I still care about you." He walked with her slowly taking his time as he escorted her to the car.
Jenn turned to face him, her face damp with hot tears, "Really? Did you really think it was over like that? I mean, we were both so upset, saying things we didn't mean." she explained, "For me... it wasn't over until now. For you....it was clearing the path to Kate."
"Is that what you really believe, Jenn?" he faced her and fought the urge to reach up and wipe away her tears. "Jenn, when I left your place I had no intentions of anything happening with anyone. You and I both know that things haven't been the same since the wedding..."
She shook her head, clearly in denial, "No... it was real for me, Sean. But I suppose she had you first. So everything I've been and done for you over the past months doesn't mean a damn." As tears continued to roll down her cheeks, she muttered a soft good bye before climbing into her car. She didn't dare look back as she drove off, for fear that Sean would have already rushed back inside to Kate.
