full name: Raymond Tiberius Gauthier

appearance: A light-skinned black man, Ray stands just over six-feet tall. He has a toned and muscular body that he keeps fit through extreme biking, including mountain biking, and devoted use of the work-out bench that occupies the spare room in his house. He keeps his hair short and buzzed close to the scalp like many other black men. He also maintains a perpetual scruff--sometimes grown out to a goatee--which adds an air of maturity to his baby-face-like facial features which tend to make him look younger than he actually is. Two tattoos decorate his upper left arm and his right shoulder.
style:While on-duty, Ray dresses like the professional educator that he is with a clean, well-ironed, button-down shirt, slacks and a tie. Away from school, Ray is much more casual, preferring to relax in a pair of blue jeans and a sleeveless shirt--which show off both his tattoos and his well-defined arms--to his more professional work attire.

general personality: After being raised in a family full of adopted siblings and being part of the close-knit community where he was raised and playing on its proud football team, Ray has learned that not all bonds are bound by blood. Some are bound by a common purpose, a shared goal, and plain, simple camaraderie. It's this type of brotherhood-type bond that Ray tries to create amongst his players. Like a surrogate-father-figure, Ray tries to instill in his players and his students the three values he views as utmost important: integrity, community, and excellence. With integrity, his players are expected to always be honest, take ownership for what they have done (both good and bad), stand up for the "little guy," and do what is right even if it isn't popular. He also expects his players to put the community's needs before their own wants, whether that be their families, the community at large, the school, or the team--in that order. Lastly, Ray expects his players to pursue excellence even if they do not achieve it, anything they do they should strive to do the best they can--no half-measures.
When conflict or problems arise, Ray tries to keep his temper in check and treat his players, friends, and family with the same respect his parents showed him by remaining calm and collected and tries to help the other person or people work out the problem for themselves and find their own solutions. However, when it comes to his younger sisters and the men in their lives, Ray's protective nature comes out and he tends to be much less rational than even he would like to be.

history: Baby Raymond was not a child born out of love. His mother, whose real name he has long-since forgotten, was fifteen-year old prostitute who called herself Jasmine and a pimp and drug-dealer who Ray has never met and whose name he has never known. When he was four years old, Ray was removed from his birth mother's care by child services after Jasmine was arrested for solicitation and possession of crack cocaine and heroin. Ray spent the next four years of his life in foster care in a series of different foster homes. The first lasted less than three months, the second just over six. It wasn't until Ray was placed under the foster care of surgeon Malcolm Gauthier and his school-teacher wife Nell that Ray finally had any semblance of stability in his life. Despite being virtual strangers, Malcolm and Nell treated Ray no differently than they did their own daughter, Mia, and over time he began to not only call them "Mom" and "Dad" he had began to think of them and Mia as his family and not just as the people who were watching over him temporarily. After his first year in their care, Malcolm and Nell--with Ray's enthusiastic support--began the long, arduous adoption process, a process that was finalized and celebrated on November 12, 1981--the date that Ray, legally, became part of the Gauthier family.
Ray would not, in the end, be the last addition to the growing Gauthier family. Two more brothers and a sister, all adopted, would join the family by the time Ray turned twelve and when he was fourteen, Malcolm and Nell were blessed with their second natural-born child, a daughter they named Jordan.
Ray met Elizabeth Cho the second week of his freshman year in high school. Elizabeth, a pretty fifteen-year old from a tight-knit Korean family, was a transfer student whose family had just moved to Spirit Lake a few weeks prior. Despite their parents' protests about dating so young, Ray and Liz dated anyway. They snuck around behind their parents' backs, often scheduling sleep overs on the same weekends at the houses of friends who just so happened to live a couple of streets away from each other. They were young, they were in love, and they were having fun. The fun stopped, however, at the end of the school year when Elizabeth discovered she was pregnant. Telling their parents had been difficult but, after enduring the shock, frustration, and lectures about responsibility, Ray and Liz found their parents to more than supportive when it came to dealing with the consequences of his and Liz's actions.
The pressures of pending parenthood, however, soured the relationship. The "magic" that had once been there was gone. Reality had pulled the curtain back from Ray and Liz's "once in a lifetime" love and exposed it for the immature love of the teenagers they were. By August, Ray and Liz had broken up. By November, the hurt feelings had begun to subside and they began talking again, this time as friends and, by the time their daughter, Lana, was born, Ray and Liz had discovered a mutual, platonic affection for one another as they set out to raise their daughter together.
While the responsibility was Ray and Elizabeth's, their mothers both stepped in to relieve them of some of the pressures of having to raise a child and attend high school. Their social calendars vanished. Ray's high school football "career" ended as he went right from school to a part-time job at the grocery store while Liz went home to care for their daughter. Ray and Elizabeth both graduated high school on schedule, with three-year old Lana in attendance, and both went on to college. Ray pursued a career in education while working part-time and taking on more and more of the responsibility of raising his daughter.
The years flew by, Ray and Liz both graduated from college, Ray was hired on as a history teacher and football coach, Liz re-married, Ray dated casually while focusing most of his energy on two primary pursuits: his career and his daughter.
