Without the distraction that Jessica typically provided, Colby had managed to finish up his homeschool program and get his diploma. It hadn't taken a lot of time or effort, but the few short, focused days was what he needed to get it done. As soon as that was taken care of, he decided that he needed to make amends with his wife before she decided to drain their account and file for divorce. He called her cell phone from his car that was parked in her driveway. He waited rather impatiently for her to pick up, though he was in a remarkably calm state.
Jessica had been a bit stressed out lately with all the studying she had to do for her finals, and then there was the tension between herself and Colby. It had been over a week since their last encounter, and agruement, and Jess really was beginning to wonder if he would ever swallow his pride and apologize. She was sitting up in her bedroom, finishing up the last of her studying, when her cell phone rang. Jess never thought she'd be the kind of girl to own a cell phone but Colby, her loaded husband, decided she needed one and bought it for her. Hearing it ring, she had a feeling it was him. Jess hadn't given her number out to many and she really didn't have many friends to begin with. With a sigh, she reached for her phone and answered. "Hello?"
"Hey Jess, it's me...Colby." His voice was quiet, almost soothing, "Can you get away for a few minutes?" He watched her bedroom window to see if she'd even bother to look out the blinds. He'd make it up to her, he'd make her forgive him. His lips curled into a soft smile as he watched her room and waited.
Eventhough she had been mad at him all week, mainly for not calling her, Jess couldn't fight the smile that threatened to form on her lips. She crossed her arms in a stubborn fashion. "Colby, who?" she asked, "I used to know a Colby but uh... he seemed to fall off the face of the earth."
"Aw, baby, I know...I'm sorry. Jessica, I want to make it up to you. I promise, no funny business...just let me show you how sorry I am, please?" He rubbed his hands along the steering wheel.
She inhaled deeply as she listened to his plea. Well...what was she going to do? She couldn't just stay mad at him forever, right? "You could have called me, ya know." she said, "You let me worry about you for over a week. Am I your wife or not?"
He sighed. Of course she wasn't going to make this easy for him. "I know I should have called...I'm sorry, Jessica. There's just been a whole lot going on." He grinned, "So you worried about me?" He avoided the last question, not really for any reason specifically. "I've missed you.. I want to see you...I want to apologize face to face."
She rolled her eyes playfully, "Yea, so? Aren't wives allowed to worry about their husbands? I thought that was part of their sworn duty or something." She moved to stand in front of the mirror, checking to see if her appearance was halfway decent.
He chuckled lightly, "Yes, ma'am, I suppose wives are entitled to worry about their husbands. I don't know much about sworn duty, but I'm pretty sure that I've messed mine up. Jessica, I am really sorry for what I did and for what I said to you. I shouldn't have acted like that and there really isn't an excuse for what I did."
All she had wanted was some kind of apology and there it was. She finally smiled freely. "Alright. So... how did you want to make this up to me?" she asked.
"It's a surprise...come down. I'm in the driveway. I'll meet you at the door." He slid out of the car and headed to the front door.
Shit. He was here? Quickly, Jess reached for her lipgloss and perfume. She hadn't seem him in a while and wanted to look and smell nice for him. She hung up her cell and headed downstairs. When she opened the door, she smiled, "Hmm.... there's my husband. And to think I almost forgot what you looked like." she teased as she stepped out and closed the door behind her.
Colby moved toward her, sliding his arms around her. "Aww...I'm really sorry baby." He kissed her lightly. It felt like it had been forever since he'd last seen her and it seemed that his need for her had remained unchanged. He smiled and then slid his hand down to take hers, "Come on, this won't take long, I promise..."
He led her down to the car, opening her door for her and waiting as she settled into the passenger seat before shutting the door. He quickly moved behind the wheel and started the car. He wasn't really in a hurry, but wanted to make sure that she was home at a reasonable hour.
Jessica didn't object when he moved in to wrap his arms around her small frame. She missed him and wouldn't have married him if she didn't believe she really loved him. "I'm sorry too." she managed to say, "I said some mean things too." She kissed him back and then headed to his car with him. Once she settled in, she glanced over at him, "So, where are we going?" she asked.
He glanced at her, smirking slightly, "It's a surprise." He drove out of the neighborhood, quickly getting on the expressway. It wasn't long before they were pulling into a large parking lot. The blue lettering above the large jewelry store read, "Blue Nile". He slid out of the car and moved to her side, helping her out as soon as her feet hit the ground. "Don't say a word just yet." He smiled as he escorted her to the doors. They were greeted by one of the associates who quickly opened the doors, "We've got everything out just as you requested, Mr. Lefabre." Another car pulled into the parking lot and a gentleman in a starched suit stepped out. Two men from the shadows greeted the newcomer before he could get very close to the doors, "Hey bub, stores closed. VIP only tonight."
Colby waited for Jessica to enter the store and then he followed her inside, his hand on the small of her back. The man greeting them led them to a large display case, illuminated with just the right amount of light to bring out the diamonds natural luster. Colby walked up to the case giving it the once over, then he nodded, smiling at the man, "Just like I requested...thank you sir."
Jess had no idea what the hell was going on but before she knew it, she was standing in front of a case full of diamonds. Her eyes widened at the immaculate sight before her, and then she shot Colby a look. "What's all this?" she asked, finding all of this hard to believe. The people at the store seemed to know Colby personally, and what was this VIP business? Jess was beginning to wonder just who this Lefabre family was.
Colby smiled at her glancing at the man standing nearby, "Look at items in the case and pick out your set." The jewelry in the case were sorted and all the sets included earrings, an elaborate necklace, a bracelet and a ring. "Pick the one you like, they are all already sized and ready to go."
Jess's eyes quickly darted from the jewelry, to Colby, and back to the jewelry. "Whaaat?" she asked, excitement taking over. "Colby, I..." she looked back at him, "I really don't think...."
Colby moved to her side and directed her to the case, "I think that one would look stunning on you." He pointed to the 3rd set from the left in the top row. "Can we see that set?" He waited as the man undid the case and pulled out the jewelry. The man took out the necklace and began to put it around Jessica's neck. A lady that had been waiting nearby, pulled out a mirror and held it for Jessica to view herself with the necklace on. The man held out the earrings for Jessica as well.
The lady hands the mirror to the man and she helps Jessica get the earrings on, then she assists her with the bracelet and allows Colby to put the ring on her finger, "It's just like shopping for clothes, Jessica. You find the one that fits you...that brings out your naturally beauty." He smiled and stepped to the side to let them experts work with her to find just the right set.
Jess didn't know what to think. Now she was suddenly being pampered by strangers and she was definitely not used to that. Before she could object, people were putting all kinds of beautiful peices of jewelry on her. When she looked at them in the mirror, she had to mutter a "Wow." Colby somehow knew exactly what would look good on her. "Colby...these are gorgeous." she said, then turned to him, "But I can't let you buy them. They...well...they aren't really me." she said, "Where am I ever going to wear them?"
Stepping towards her, he took her hands in his, "They may not be the you in the past, but they are they you as my wife." He smiled at her, "Trust me...you have will plenty of opportunity to wear them. I'll see to that. You just have pick which set you want...and if you can't make a decision, then I'll be forced to buy all of them..."
As if possible, her eyes widened even more at his last comment. "Alright, alright. I'll pick one." she said, not wanting her husband to go crazy buying everything in the store. She didn't want to ask where the money came from. She knew he got some kind of inheritance but had no idea for how much. She looked back at her reflection in the mirror. It was perfect. Odd how Colby picked the perfect set on the first try. "I like this one."
"Are you sure? There are a few others that you may want to look at before you settle on just one." The man wanted to ensure that she was choosing the one she really wanted and not just the first one out of the case.
Jess quickly shook her head in protest. "No. This is it." she said, reaching up and fingering the chain, "This is the one I want."
Colby nodded and the man and lady immediately went to work packaging it up for her to take home. He slid his arm around her and led her towards the door, "So am I forgiven?" He grinned as he stopped with her right at the door.
Jess laughed, "I think so!" she replied, hooking her arm through his. "Colby, you really didn't have to spend all that money on me. I'd rather you used it for something more sensible."
"You're worth it, Jessica." He pulled her into a soft embrace and kissed her slowly, "I'm really sorry for what happened..."
He led her to the car after he pulled out of the kiss, "Come on, I'll get you home...just like I promised."
Jess climbed into the passenger seat and interlaced her fingers with Colby's. She was finally content again, though she had no idea how long that would last. There still seemed to be something different about Colby. Something that she couldn't quite put her finger on. Oh well. She rested her head on his shoulder as he drove. She wouldn't mention it to him right now. The moment was too perfect and she wasn't about to start another fight. She lifted her chin to press a soft kiss to his cheek. "I love you."
He held her hand as he drove her home. "I love you too, Jessica." He pulled into the driveway and shut off the ignition. He got out and quickly opened her door for her. He walked her to the front door of the house. Glancing at the door, he leaned in, hugging her, "I'll be so glad when we don't have to do this..."
She nodded, knowing exactly what he meant. She let out a sigh, "Yea...I know." she said, "But I don't think we can tell anyone for a while still. Who knows what Hailee would do. I really don't know her too well and God...Jackson? Well, let's just say I'm not ready to be a widow just yet."
Colby frowned, "I thought we were going to do this after you graduated, Jessica. I want to be with you...we're married and there's not anything anyone can do about it now no matter what they think." He didn't want to fight with her, but he ached to have just a few more minutes with her, "Can I come up?"
She shifted from one foot to the other. "Colby, I know that, but I don't graduate until next year, remember?" She didn't want to fight with him either. They had just reconciled and she wanted that to last. She looked back at the house, considering the consequences. "I don't know, Colby." she said, "Aunt Hailee would flip if I let you back in my room."
He nodded, taking a deep breath. He'd forgotten that she wasn't a senior this year. He wasn't sure how he'd forgotten that bit of information. "Why don't you home school? I can help you."
She looked at him like he was crazy. "Colby...I'm not in some big hurry to graduate." she said, "I happen to like school. I've been in and out of so many that I wouldn't mind sticking around at the same one for two years." She didn't want to quit going just when she was beginning to make friends.
Colby nodded. It was a battle that was best left for later. He wanted to ask about Matt, to find out if he was bothering her anymore. "I should get back home."
She reached out and ran her hand down his arm, then allowed her fingers to tangle with his as her hand met his. "I'm sorry." she said softly, "Let's get together tomorrow though." she added, "I get out of school early because of finals. We can, I dunno, go out to eat or something."
"Going out to eat, was one of the last things he wanted to do with her, but for now he'd be patient and humor her. "Alright...I'll make some plans for tomorrow."
She nodded, "Ok, sounds good. Just uh... lemme know." She leaned in to steal a kiss, letting her lips linger for a moment while she savored the taste.
Colby closed his eyes, kissing her back softly. "God, I miss you so much Jessica." It was killing him tonight to leave her.
"I miss you too, Colby." she said, then took a step back towards the door as she sighed. "I'll see you tomorrow."
"It's a date." He stepped back as well, then hurried down the walk back to his car, waiting to ensure she made it inside before he slid behind the wheel and drove himself into the darkness that waited.
