How Kai had survived the day, she had no idea. She sighed, turning her head and stared out the airplane window as they taxied to Yan's.. Well not Yan's anymore but her private hangar. She looked away, and reached up, rubbing her forehead. She was tried.. Drained actually. And having to deal with Jun the whole flight from Puerto Rico hadn't helped any. All she wanted.. Was to go back and tell Jaime to stay with her in the hotel. They were on their Honeymoon, and.. She shook her head, it was pointless.. Going over how things might have been different. Things couldn't change. She'd lost her husband and her brother within a day of each other, and now. She really was alone. Sure, there were people around her. But they didn't know her.
"Kai, We're here.." Jun's voice broke through to Kai.
"Hmm?" Kai murmured.
"We can get off the plane now." Jun said slightly exasperated with Kai already.
"Right," Kai nodded, and unbuckled her seat belt. Rising to her feet, she gathered her purse, and the paperwork that was needed to bring Jaime's body into the country.
"I'll take care of that," Jun offered reaching for the paperwork.
"No, I'll do it." Kai stated firmly and turned and headed down the aisle of the plane and down the steps. She turned, handed the paperwork over to the airport official and glanced over watching as Jaime's casket was unloaded by the airport staff, and waited as patiently as possible while.. They did whatever they needed to do. "How much longer?" She asked, turning to stare at Jun.
"I.. I really don't know." Jun said with a slight shrug.
"Airport Security," announced one of the three police officers as the casket was being rolled in their direction and lowered off the plane. "We need to look inside this casket, for safety purposes." The more vocal of the three looked to Kai and then Jun. "We don't mean any harm or disrespect, but it's required. Sorry for the inconvenience, ma'am. Sir." He turned and went back to the side of the officers as they carefully stood to the sides of the casket. "What are you guys waiting on? C'mon, top then bottom."
Kai frowned but nodded as Jun placed her hand on Kai's arm. Right, no need to get argumentative with the security people. Tucking her hair behind her ear, she had to turn away as they opened the casket. She closed her eyes, and her hands clenched at her side and she took a long deep breath. She wasn't going to start crying again. She needed to be-
"Shit," Jun muttered under her breath, and grabbed Kai's arm and tried to pull Kai further away from the security people and the casket.
"What?" What's going on?" Kai demanded, her eyes snapping open.
"Kai.. I don't think.." Jun began.
"What? You don't think what? What's going on?" Kai demanded again, straining to see over her shoulder. What was Jun trying to keep her from seeing?!
"Ummm, ma'am?" The officer turned away from the casket to face her. "We're done here. I think we are. Nothing unusual to be found. But can I ask you a question? Is this suppose to be empty?"
Kai shook Jun off of her and turned to stare at the officer. "What? Empty?!" She looked over at Jun and glared at her before looking back at the officer. "What do you mean empty? Of course it's not empty!" She said and pushed Jun away from her as she moved to examine the casket herself.
Everyone stepped aside to let her view it for herself. There just as big and blank was an empty casket. Silence fell over them all for a moment and the officers closed the casket - seeing that it was clearly upsetting Kai. "Ma'am, I'm sorry. We thought you knew. Where were you transporting this body from? We have to put out a report."
Her eyes widened and she shook her head. "Knew? Why would I bring an empty casket here?" She demanded, glaring at the officer as though he were stupid. "There.. He was in the casket before we left Puerto Rico! I SAW his body inside there before we left!" She insisted, shaking her head. "Where did it go?" She demanded, turning to stare at everyone around her. "Where did.. How..I want to know where he is. Now!" She cried, stumbling back a few feet, before taking a deep breath and tried to calm herself. "There's got to be some sort of mix up. Call the airport in Puerto Rico... If we have an empty..Surely then he's there.. Right?"
The officers exchanged weirded out glances for a moment, before snapping into action. "Find a way to get on the phone with the airport they just left right now. If they tell you they don't have the body and we really do have a missing corpse... godamnit, this is going to sound crazy - but search the plane. Contain whatever passengers are stil around and question them." He shook his head and then looked back to Kai sympathetically. "Don't worry ma'am. We're on it."
Kai opened her mouth to respond, but Jun quickly ushered her a few feet away. "Kai, there's really nothing you can do here. Why don't you go home, and I'll stay here?"
Kai looked back over at the officers frowning, not even hearing Jun. How was this possible? She blinked as Jun shook her, trying to get her attention. "God Jun! Leave me alone!" Kai cried pushing away from the other woman.
"Kai, really. You hovering around isn't going to help anything. And I'm sure the nice officers over there will call you as soon as they know anything, " She said and looked over at them. "Right?"
"Of course," said the sole remaining officer with a nod, watching them as the others scampered off with their walkie-talkies crackling and their white gloves coming out of their back pockets. "Our first lead we come across. You will be the first to know. You're more than welcome to leave and come back later if you want." His walkie-talkie beeped and he stepped off to the side, holding a finger up to the women, "Excuse me for a moment."
Kai turned and glared at Jun. "What is wrong with you? I can't just leave! I have to kn-"
"Oh come off of it already Kai," Jun hissed, reaching out and grabbed Kai's arm and pulled her closer. "Yes, it's weird, and really, you can't do anything here. You have responsibilities now. There are going to be families who are going to want to pay their respects to you for Yan. Pull yourself together. You can mourn later."
Kai's eyes widened and her mouth dropped open. She could not believe how insensitive Jun was being. "Bu-"
"No, Kai. No buts! It's a harsh reality, but none of us would be in this mess if you hadn't ran off." Jun reminded her with a frown before letting go of her arm.
