Holding the door open for the short woman, Officer Barnes was patient. The morgue was cool, considerably cooler than the rest of the building and dark. The space to walk in was limited, since the area was designed to be more vertical. "We got a phone call from some people who lived by the church," he explained quietly, knowing that she didn't have many details. Sometimes the small stuff was left out, especially when close family was involved. "They heard gunshots, went to investigate... and well, found him laying next to a tombstone."
Kai's bottom lip trembled, but she bit down on it, trying to brace herself for.. What she was about to see. She was trying to be strong, trying desperately not to believe that.. That Jaime was dead! she shook her head and looked at the officer who was escorting her and nodded, letting him know that she was indeed listening, even though at the moment she just wanted to scream at him that it wasn't true, that.. That it couldn't be Jaime who had been shot! She look a deep breath, and lifted her chin a bit, "Please.. Just.. Just let me see.."
"We usually only let the family view the body to identify it," he said flipping on the dim light switch and walking down to the door. Office Barnes placed his hand on it and paused to look at her. "Just so you know, we've already identified him... from ID. But we'll let you look any way." She seemed so adamant of it anyway. Slowly, he gripped the handle and pulled the body on out.
"He's my husband!" She snapped, finally losing her patience with the whole process. Only let the family view? What the heck did they think she was?! Her eyes widened as Officer Barnes pulled Jaime's body slowly from it's cooler, and her hands flew up covering her mouth, "Oh.." She whispered and reached out her fingers brushing against his cold cheek. "Oh Jaime.." She drew her hand back, and stumbled back a step, shaking her head. "No.. Oh God.. No.." She cried, realizing that Jaime wasn't ever going to come back to her. She stepped back to his body, and cupped his face between her hands. "Jaime.."
The Officer just watched and shook his head. He wasn't new to this. The shock, the sobbing, he'd seen it all. He was actually attempting to be nice but he never knew what to say in situations like this. The guy hadn't paled completely. He was probably still running warm blood in his veins. It took several hours or so he'd heard. The shootout had just happened. Apart of Barnes just couldn't help but wonder though as he looked at the guy with the sheet pulled down to his shoulder blades and then to the young girl with the huge wedding band on her finger; what kind of guy was this? What man would get gunned down on his honeymoon? In a cemetery behind a church? "Alright, I think you've seen enough."
"No!" Kai cried, turning her head to glare at the officer. She sucked in a deep breath and looked down at Jaime's body again. "I'd.. I'd like a few moments alone..With him." Her gaze whipped back to the officer. "I can.. Have a few moments alone, can't I?"
He sighed deeply and knew it was against regulations, but shrugged. "Yeah, sure. Five minutes." He glanced to his watch and looked over at her as he went to the door. "I'll be standing out here, Mrs. Seda."
She nodded, her eyes wide and watched as he walked out of the room before turning back to Jaime's body. She stared down at him, still unable to believe he was dead. She licked her lips and looked around and saw one of those roller stools and grabbed it, pulling it over so she could sit beside him. She reached out, her fingers barely brushing against his skin and shook her head. "Why.." She whispered sadly. Suddenly her facial expression hardened and she shook her head. Whoever had done this? Oh, they would pay. She didn't care who they were. She was going to make sure they paid, and paid dearly.
She stood and leaned over, pressing a kiss on his cheek. "I'm going to find out who did this Jaime.. And I'm.. I'm going to make them pay. I promise.." She whispered, soothing his hair back before standing up straight. She hated leaving him here.. But until she could arrange for his body to be flown back to LA, she knew she had little choice. She looked at him one last time before turning on her heel and walked out of the cooler. She looked over at the officer, her brow arching the slightest bit. "What else do you know?" She asked, wanting to know everything she could. "Did anyone see anything? Anyone?"
Surprised by her abrupt entrance, he straightened up from his spot on the wall. "Umm, no. The people that found him saw a car though. It was speeding off back into town. Dark colored, but no tag - no make, model or type." He began to recall all the information he had. "Let's see. We've had one of our CSI's check the scene. But so far all they know is that he died from two gunshot wounds. One to the torso and one to the heart. He'd been there for maybe five minutes before the witnesses came. I'm sorry I don't have much. There are still a lot of people on this case."
She nodded her head, her gaze no longer gentle, but hard and angry. She'd already decided to not put much faith into the work of the police officers, but rather.. As much as she knew she'd regret it, she'd already made up her mind to call Yan and get his help. He was sure to find out more than the Police were. For a moment she was mildly curious if the officer before her even knew what family she came from, though would they even know of him here? Oh she didn't care. She flashed the officer a small smile and nodded her head again. "I'm sure your people are doing everything they can to find my husband's killer."
"Absolutely. I'm sorry for your loss," he said sincerely, knowing she wouldn't take shit he said to heart. They never did. So he didn't make weight behind it either. In a way, it was just another death in Puetro Rico. Most likely destined to go unsolved. "Do you need a ride back to your hotel, ma'am?"
"No, no thank you. I have some things to take care of before I head back there.." She said vaguely preoccupied with her own thoughts. She blinked and looked back to the officer. "Thank you though.. I should get going.. I..I have a lot to take care so I can take him back home. I will.. Be able to take him back to LA with me, won't I?"
"I don't see why not." It wasn't a hard process. And he wasn't being cremated or anything. Officer Barnes offered her a small smile. "Just talk it over with the lady at the front desk, she'll give you some forms to fill out. You can bring them back later or before you leave town."
She nodded, and turned away, quickly walking down the hall to grab the forms the officer had mentioned so she could get out of the morgue and get down to business.
