Jaime knew he shouldn't be doing this. He should be with Kai,
running, despite the promise he made to stop. He found himself
outside, miles away from their hotel on the beach - far inland. Still
one could smell the saltwater in the air. The sun was only hours away
from setting completely. Jaime was in a cemetary. A small one behind
a church and Jaime get an eerie feeling up the back of his neck as he
walked through it. His eyes trailed around and he stopped when he
reached a tombstone. 'Loving and Dedicated...' He couldn't even read
the whole thing. Jaime knelt on one knee and let his fingers graze
over the cold stone. He closed his eyes and exhaled deeply.
"Someone loved that person," the voice said from behind
Jaime. "Someone loved him and now he's gone. Forever. The people who
love him will never see him again."
Faith stood behind Jaime, the wind ruffling her hair. She looked
so...harmless, yet the look in her eyes. That look was pure and utter
hatred. Pure and utter hatred and evil. Was Faith evil? No, but in
regards to Jaime? She was evil as hell. She wanted him dead and
unfortunately for Jaime, not only was he seeing all of Faith's anger
towards her brother's murder, but also because of Jason. All the pain
she had suffered...the stupid baby...Jackie...oh, Faith had a lot of
pent up anger and hatred to get out of her...and she was going to
start with who she blamed for her brother's death. The man who
drugged her, had sex with her...then left her in her office to not
remember a thing. The man who had kept her from being at her
brother's side when he died.
Silent, Faith pulled out the small handgun she had in her bag, aiming
it straight at Jaime as he turned around. "Just like Justice."
Jaime turned around slowly and rose to his feet with caution. He knew
immediately from the sound of her voice that it was Faith. He looked
to the gun in her hand and then to her eyes. Dark, hurt and lusting
for vengance. She wanted him dead. Fuck. Something told Jaime this
was a bad idea. He held up both hands to let her know that he wasn't
armed. He wasn't going to try and resist. But that didn't mean he was
going to let her kill him. Not a chance.
"I didn't kill Justice," Jaime said solemnly. "You know that."
"No, but you helped, didn't you?" Faith's eyes never once wavered
from Jaime's, never once did her hand not remain steady with the
handgun pointed directly at him. He could chance it, assume she
wasn't able to take a shot but he'd be sorely mistaken. Justice had
taught her how to take care of herself...and now those lessons would
come in handy to seek revenge for his death. "You knew it was going
to happen, didn't you? That's why you were at the club that
night..that's why you drugged me and had sex with me...to keep me
from going to Justice." Her voice was emotionless as she watched him.
She had tracked him down here, not waiting for Duncan to find him for
her. She wasn't stupid and she wasn't going to sit back and count on
that man to do something for her. This was something she was going to
do herself. She'd stand there and watch him die at her hand..and
she'd smile. She'd smile and finally feel fucking happy. She'd have
her revenge. "Do you know how long I've blamed myself for this,
Jaime?" she asked him, her eyes almost black now. "Do you know how
long I've blamed myself for my brother being murdered? When all
along...it was you and whoever the hell you worked for." She shook
her head. She wanted answers and she wanted them now. "Why did you do
it?" she demanded, her voice raising now. "Answer me, damnit!"
"I don't remember," he said truthfully. Jaime knew she wouldn't
believe it, but it was the truth. "I don't remember any of that...
all I know is that I didn't kill your brother."
Jaime thought he understood this. He remembered Faith, he remembered
some nights in a hazy jazz club, hitting on her occasionally... but
drugging her and sleeping with her? He had no idea what she was
talking about. If she only knew... he'd lost his memory three years
ago. Even if he did do the things she accused him of, Jaime would
never remember it with a gun pointed at him. He doubted Faith would
want to hear his side if he did recall the things that went behind
that night.
She eyed him, her eyes slowly narrowing as he spoke. She wanted
answers and he wasn't going to give them to her, obviously. Did she
believe that he remembered nothing? Not really, no. Sure, she had
spent the last few years without any memory of the night but it was
back and she knew what was happening. "I was supposed to meet Justice
for dinner," she informed him tightly, the gun still pointed directly
at him. "Only I didn't make it. You want to know why? because I was
trying to get work down at the club..because I was trying to get it
done and you wouldn't leave me the hell alone." Oh yes, she
definately remembered all of that. "You spilled my drink and were
determined to replace it, even when I told you to just go away.." she
frowned, "and the next thing I remember, I was waking up in my
office, naked and alone...and my brother had been murdered. Oh, and I
mention that my staff saw you going upstairs to my office? So wether
you want to believe it or not, wether you pulled the trigger of one
of the guns that shot him, I hold you responsible for his death."
She cocked the gun, the loud clicking sound resounding through the
silent graveyard, levelling it on him. "It's unfortunate you don't
remember, Jaime. Because I'd have loved for you to know what I'm
killing you for.." she trailed off and then shrugged, "but I'll get
over it," she decided as she squeezed her finger, feeling the recoil
from the gun and hearing the loud shot, shooting him in the stomach,
not once flinching at the idea that she planned to kill a man.
Jaime wasn't surprised to hear the sound of Faith's gun cock. He'd
heard a million guns make that sound in his lifetime... the one he
could remember. But it felt... as if he were in the Twilight Zone.
For all the times he'd taken a life... He heard Faith loud and clear
and tried to brace himself. Yet no one could brace themselves for
something like this. Jaime groaned, winced hard and took a step back
as the bullet buried itself in his stomach.
His hand immediately went up but he didn't touch the wound. His torso
burned with pain and Jaime suddenly felt as if everything was moving
in slow motion. Looking down slowly, his eyes were straining in the
fading light, Jaime saw blood begin to spread and fall. His eyes
watered. He stood steady, his face twisted in pain and his eyes back
on Faith... waiting for the next shot.
This would have been the time where most people would have realized
what they had just done and tried to help the fallen...but not Faith.
She stood there, staring as Jaime stumbled back watched as the blood
started to pour from his wound. She felt..nothing. She didn't feel
regret...but she didn't feel pleasure either. She felt..nothing.
Silently, she lifted her arm again and once again, took a shot, this
time aiming for his chest. That was the last shot she would take.
Justice had been killed by two bullets and now...now Jaime would
suffer the same fate. He hadn't even apologized...even if he couldn't
remember, she'd have thought he'd apologize, try and convince her to
spare his life...but she had gotten nothing. No remorse, nothing. Her
eyes began to sting..because now..now this had been finally taken
care of. She had done it, just as she had always said she would. No
one had believed her, she was sure. Not Yan, not Jared..probably not
Duncan either, yet here she was, her gun smoking and two bullets
missing from it...and there he was, laying on the ground, bleeding.
Because of her. Because of Justice.
Finally, she lowered her gun and stared back at him, her eyes a black
swirl of nothing. She was beautiful, standing there like that...like
a vengeful angel, but there was nothing angelic about what she had
done. What she felt.
Jaime laid on the cold soil gasping for air. He'd hit the ground the
moment the bullet had struck his chest. Pain circulated through his
body. It was so sharp on his heart, Jaime was sure... it'd only be a
matter of time before he was dead. He closed his eyes, but then
realized that was the last thing he should be doing. Struggling to
keep them awake, Jaime couldn't move, couldn't close his mouth
completely and felt the iron sinking in his stomach further and
further.
Faith's face stared down at him. Jaime could only wonder if she was
going to do to him like he'd done to so many others. On last shot
between the eyes. But it never came... Jaime wasn't relieved. He
couldn't grab such concepts. All he could think of was Kai... his
wife... his newly wed wife. And all he was in was pain. Fuckin'
unbelievable pain, that throbbed and every second felt like an
eternity. If she was expecting an apology, final words... she
wouldn't get them from Jaime. He didn't grovel or beg for anything.
Even laying face up in the dirt, certain to die, Jaime kept silent.
His eyelids got heavy regardless and as Faith turned and left, Jaime
turned his head. Life drifted away everytime he exhaled. His vision
blurred with pain and tears from the pain, Jaime swallowed as
flowers... flowers and... tombstones...
