Kristen slid her sunglasses from her eyes and rested them on her head as stepped into B & R wearing a white blouse, a pair of hip-hugging jeans and a black peacoat with an army green purse with waves painted on the flap in white slung around her shoulder. She stood still for a moment, glancing over the racks of clothing, some of which were topped by mannequins adorned in different styles of dress. Drawing a strand of her free-flowing, blond hair back behind her ear, she started to meander through the racks and began to casually peruse.
Beth glanced up from her sketch book and watched the slender blond flipping through the different racks of clothing. Placing her pencil down, she pushed herself up from her seat and skirted around the sales desk. Smoothing a hand over her cream colored t-shirt and making sure her jean skirt was tugged down over her thighs, she tucked a lock of her dirty blond hair behind her ear and approached the other blond with a smile. "Hi, you need any help? Or are you just browsing?"
"No, thank you," Kristen replied with a warm smile and turned back to going through the rack of clothing she'd been focused on at the moment. Then, reconsidering, she turned back to the employee just as she was turning around. "Actually, I was wondering if you were hiring..."
Beth stopped dead in her tracks and slowly turned to face the blond again. Were they hiring? Heck, so far it was only her and Kate working.. But she knew once the baby came, Beth was gonna surely need the help. Because she just didn't see Kate coming to work right after the baby was born. And things were finally picking up.. So why not? She took a deep breath, "Well.. We actually are.. I think. " She paused, and frowned, "Well, not officially, but the other owner, she's pregnant and I know we're going to need help.." She trailed off though suddenly smiled, "I'm Beth, I co-own the place." She introduced herself extending her hand out.
"I'm Kristen," she replied with a smile. She took Beth's hand and gave it a firm shake, Kristen hated when women shook hands so daintily, like they'd break if they did it the right way. "So, these are yours?" she asked, pointing her thumb at the designs on the racks.
Beth reached up, running her fingers through her hair as she glanced around at the clothes, "Well some are mine, and some are Kate's.. But yeah.." She grinned and reached out and brushed her fingers over a couple of shirts. "And people seem to like them.. So, " She shrugged flashing Kristen another smile.
"I can see why," Kristen nodded, folding her arms across her chest and scanned the room again. "So," she said, getting back to the point. "I suppose I should fill out an application..."
Beth wrinkled her nose and looked over at the sales desk. "Ah, about that..." Beth said clearing her throat and flashed Kristen a sheepish smile, "We don't actually have any applications.. Because well.." She paused frowning, "Actually I don't know why we don't have any.." She shrugged and glanced at the door, "I guess I should order some.." She scratched her arm, thinking. "Ummm.. Maybe a resume would work until we get some? I mean, why not right?"
"Um, well," Kristen hesitated. She hated this part. The last three places had practically laughed her out of the building when they realized she had no work history. "I've never actually had a job before..."
"Oh.. " Beth murmured but the laughed, "Well I've never actually owned a store, so I guess we're even!" She chuckled and motioned Kristen to follow her back over to the sales desk. "I went from bar tending to designing and selling clothes.. How about that?" She glanced over her shoulder at the other woman, "So are you going to school or anything?"
"Currently," Kristen answered, following Beth over to the sales desk and taking a spot on the customer side. "I graduate in May and the job I planned on taking kinda, well, disappeared."
Sinking back down in her seat, Beth frowned looking across the desk at Kristen, "Oh.. Well that sucks." She picked up her pencil and tapped the end of it softly on the surface of the desk. "So, you don't mind if I ask why you'd want to work here do you? I mean, we're not a huge shop or anything.. And we're barely a blip on the fashion radar.."
"Um...I don't know actually," Kristen replied before giving a weak smile. "Actually, that's a lie. I went into the GAP and there was this brainless twit working and...I dunno...I probably would strangled her five minutes in."
Beth wrinkled her nose, "Well... Most clothing stores don't have the most intelligent people working behind the counter ya know. Seems to me, smart people have trouble being all bubbly, and keeping a constant bright smile on their faces." She eyed Kristen for a moment, "You know what I mean right? When was the last time you went into.. Oh.. Let's say a Guess store and didn't see a sales person without a painted on smile?"
"I don't know," Kristen answered with a humored smile. "Probably the first time I went into a Guess! store. So, um, when did you want me to start?"
"How about tomorrow? Kate has a doctor's appointment.." She trailed off and smiled, "And most of the time she doesn't much feel like working after those. But I think she'll be here in the morning.. So you can start tomorrow and meet Kate. Sound good to you?"
"Sounds perfect," she replied, "I've got class until noon so I can stop in after that."
"Great!" Beth beamed, quite happy with actually hiring someone. "Oh.. Just so you aren't surprised.. Kate's bi-polar boyfriend Griffith stops in from time to time. I think he's on his.. Happy time, so.. Just so you know." Beth informed Kristen quite seriously.
"Um, ok," Kristen said with an uncertain smile. "So, is that a hint that I should bring a stun gun and horse tranquilizer?" she added sarcastically.
"That would probably be best. He's weird." Beth said with a nod, but flashed Kristen a smile. "So tomorrow then? Oh, and we don't have a dress code.. Obviously," she said motioning to her own clothes, "So just wear whatever you feel comfortable in."
"All right, well, I guess I will see you tomorrow afternoon then," Kristen said with a smile and nod before she turned back around and headed out of the shop.
