Of course Elijah had gone back to his place, and back to his
girlfriend but that didn't mean Piper wasn't on his mind. He still
cared for her and he knew she realized that now. When he woke up the
next morning and listened to his messages he wasn't suprised to
learn that they'd made the headlines. Oh god, he'd have to call her
up so they could make some kind of statement together.
Piper was still in bed when the phone rang. She wasn't that suprised
to see that she was still in her cocktail dress, and that her head
was pounding. With her eyes still half closed, she reached out to
the nightstand and grabbed the phone. "Yea?" she answered with a
groggy voice.
Elijah was standing outside her door with a cup of fresh coffee as
she answered. "Your door is locked," he said with a smile on his
face. He used to know where the key was but apparently she'd either
lost it since then or changed the hiding place. "Want to let me in?"
The familiar voice on the other end had her head perking up rather
quickly. " 'Lijah?" She sat up in bed and looked in the mirror
across the room. MAJOR bedhead going on. That's what you get going
to bed with an updo. "What are you doing here?" she asked, as the
events from the previous night began coming back. She remembered
seeing him at the party last night. Oh, God. She hoped she didn't do
anything embarassing.
"Yeah, it's me. I just wanted to make sure you were okay and show
you something." He realized that she wasn't going to get out of bed
and just groaned. "One second okay," he put the phone down and just
started buzzing the other occupants. Finally he was in and heading
towards her apartment, "You decent?" he asked as he was outside his
door waiting to come in.
She was still rubbing the sleep out of her eyes, "Huh? Wait a
second, Elijah..." she said when she realized what he was doing. She
couldn't let him see her like this! "Yea, I'm decent but you can't
just-"
He was already inside the second after she said she was
decent. "What?" he said as he hung up the phone and headed into her
bathroom to grab some medicine and a cup of water for her before
returning. "What's wrong with this?"
She quickly reached up and tried to smooth down her crazy
hair. "Damn it, 'Lijah." she said, "I look like hell. You could have
waited for me to clean myself up." Without hesitation, she took the
pills and water from him. "Thanks."
"Oh come on. You're beautiful with bed head. I know what you look
like." After she took her sip of water he dipped his hand in the
water and proceeded to wet down/calm down her hair. "How are you
feeling?"
The way he was naturally taking care of her was making her
uncomfortable. It wasn't supposed to be like this. Not anymore.
Elijah cheated on her, ending their relationship for the second
time. He shouldn't even be at her place right now. Still, she had a
hard time throwing him out, especially when he was his charming
self. "So, tell." she said, "What did I do last night to ruin my
image?"
He then produced the tabloid that had a few out of context pictures
with outrageous headlines. "Not too terrible for me though. Makes
me look pretty awesome." He moved to take a seat on her bed so he
could look at them with her. "No one followed me here though."
She rolled her eyes. "Figures. When do YOU ever look anything less?"
It was always Piper looking bad, even when it was Elijah that was
cheating on her. "God...how much did those people let me drink?" she
asked, rubbing her forehead.
"I've got no idea. I think you downed 2 in front of me but you don't
look too bad." He was sort of suprised that there was no sign of
Adrian but he wasn't going to bring it up. "So can I take you out
for breakfast or make some for you?"
Her eyes stopped scanning the context of the paper and lifted to
look directly at Elijah. "Why?" she asked suspiciously.
"Why what?" he asked with a small smile. "Can't I take you out to
eat without a reason? I thought we agreed that we were going to try
and be friends. Isn't this what friends do?
She raised one brow, "What else happened....last night?"
"What do you mean?" he asked ever so innocently as he laid back down
on her bed. "You mean other than you telling me just to walk away?"
She looked at him in confusion, "Ok... I'm lost." she said, "Did
you...did we...you know..."
"Oh yes, it was the most amazing thing ever. It was quite a ride."
He then just laughed a little bit. "No, I didn't even kiss you or
even touch you, other then to help you into the cab or up the
stairs."
She swatted at him, "I'm gonna kick your ass." she said with a yawn.
It actually suprised her that nothing happened between them last
night. She had been drinking alot and well, she always had a hard
time resisting Elijah. "Well... I'm shocked to hear what a gentleman
you were." she said sarcastically. "What about Lil Miss Wonderful?"
she asked, then suddenly remembered that they were living together
now. She couldn't help but make a sour face, "She didn't care that
you helped me home?"
"Now, now I thought you were going to offer to make amends for that.
Obviously I didn't get any action last night," he lied as he tried
not to stare at her in that dress. "You know you should probably
change out of that. It's getting all wrinkled. Want me to help?" He
of course was just teasing. "Do you think I honestly care?"
She smoothed the dress down over her thighs when she caught him
staring. "I just woke up in it. I don't think it's gonna get any
more wrinkled than this." She tossed her hair back out of her face
and looked at him, "Do I think you care? About a girlfriend?
Nooo....cause that would be a first." The sarcasm in her voice
didn't cease. "Can I ask you something?" she asked anyway, "Why do
you even bother with giving girls the title of 'girlfriend' anyway?"
"Oh no, see this isn't fair. You get to ask me all sorts of
questions when I just come here as a nice gesture." He shook his
head as he sat up and moved to look her straight in the eyes. "Cause
I have to," he said before pressing a quick kiss to her lips and
then standing up. "So are you coming out with me or are you going to
brave my cooking?"
She was about to open her mouth to say something when she was
interrupted with a kiss. It was quick and brief and didn't exactly
send her toes curling, but she did feel something. That was so not
cool. "Hey! I don't see where you think you can just waltz on in
here, start taking care of me, then KISS me." She climbed out of bed
as she bitched and moaned. "This doesn't change anything, I hope you
know." She stretched when she got to her feet. "I don't have
anything here to cook so you're just gonna have to wait for me to
get dressed so we can go out."
"Alright, works for me." He wasn't even fazed by her freaking out at
him. But honestly it wasn't as bad as he'd thought. "I'll go wait
outside." He headed out of her bedroom but not before stealing
another glance of her looking like that. She was actually quite cute
with that bed head.
Of course she caught that last glimpse he stole before leaving the
bedroom. She shook her head before closing the door. He thought he
was so slick, didn't he? Just because he was a good boy the previous
night, he thought he had the foot in the door? Well, Piper didn't,
and wouldn't, forget about him and Willow. She'd be friends with
him, nothing more. Ten minutes later, she entered the living room
dressed in velour jogging pants with a matching zip-up hoodie. Her
hair was pulled back into a ponytail now. She found him making
himself comfortable on the couch. Feet up and all. "This is the only
time I'll tolerate this, by the way."
"Only time your tolerating what? My feet up or me stopping by?" he
asked as he quirked an eyebrow. She was so damn cute. "I think you
look pretty sexy but that really isn't a good disguise if you don't
want to be seen with me."
"Both!" He was frustrating her and he knew it. He enjoyed it, the
bastard. "You can't just...waltz right in here..." she said, making
a sweeping movement with her arm, "...and, and...think that
everything is gonna be all fine and dandy. And you calling me sexy
isn't gonna change anything." she added as her cheeks flushed.
"Oh yes it will. I know it will." He stood up and walked over to
her. "How about something low key?" There was his favorite diner
just a couple blocks away. "No strings attached I promise." He
glanced down at her drawstring pants and was so tempted to touch
them but he was behaving himself so far.
She instinctively took a step back, but ran into a wall instead.
Damn it. "Low key?" she asked, taking a deep swallow before licking
her lips, "Yea.. that's fine. We can uh...go to that uh...you
know... that uh... diner on the corner." God! She needed to get the
hell away from him. His damn cologne was intoxicating.
When she ran into the wall he couldn't help but laugh. "Are you
still drunk?" he asked as he moved towards her. He had definitely
come with good intentions but this was fun. "Come here," he said as
he moved in closer and slipped his arms around her. "I won't kiss
you again unless you've brushed your teeth."
"NO!" she replied defensively. "I'm not drunk. Just...didn't see
that there." she said. He pissed her off sometimes, the way he could
just charm her into just about anything. Not this time, she told
herself. When he moved in close, she kept her head back, away from
him. "In that case, I won't ever brush them again."
"Oh right, come on now." He moved one of his hands up to her
head. "Your head feeling okay?" he said as he lightly massaged
it. "I swear it's a miracle you made it to your room last night."
"Don't." Her voice was soft, only a step up from a whisper. She
couldn't let him touch her. Couldn't let him think he could weasle
his way back into her bed.
"Why?" Elijah said as he didn't move at all, not forward or
backward. He just stood still.
She started to lift her hand, to press it against his chest in
attempt to push him away, but she stopped herself. She couldn't
afford to lay a hand on him. Her heart wouldn't be able to take
it. "You know why. Can we just...can we just go eat?"
Elijah stepped back and just headed towards the door. He'd tried but
she wasn't giving him anything. "You don't have to come with me if
your embarassed or something. I just think you should show off that
sexy outfit and show them how you rebound."
She watched him walk towards the door and she suddenly let out the
breath she had no idea she had been holding. Then she rolled her
eyes, "Of course I'm coming with you. I'm hungry dammit." She
grabbed her purse and keys and met him at the door. "Ya know...one
of these days, the headline's gonna read 'Elijah Burr : Desperate
For A Second Chance' "
"Wait, you know that your paying your half right?" he teased as they
started walking. "Unfortunately, that's not the case. I've already
had my second chance. i think this would be round three and I've
pretty much given up on it being a win. So there goes my winning
score."
As she walked alongside of him, she let out a sigh and nudged him
with her shoulder. "Ya well...they also say three times is a charm."
She wasn't sure if that would be true in their case but for
now...Piper wasn't turning down a free meal. Also, there was the
fact that Elijah's lil girlfriend would see them all over the papers
together, bringing Piper a great deal of pleasure. Suddenly, she
