Being stuck with his sister wasn't the worse thing in the world. The
worst thing was being with his grandmother. She was so damn pushy.
He liked his freedom and he didn't have that annoying cousin of his
around. He honestly didn't know what to do today though because he
was bored so he ended up just settling in front of the tv sipping a
beer.
Lila slid the key into the lock of Cassidy's apartment door and
gave it a gentle turn then pushed the door open carefully. She
stepped in quietly and closed the door behind her before pocketing
the key and moving further into the apartment. She'd been on her
way back to the restaurant after a doctor's appointment and decided
to stop by to check on Griffin and she found him on the couch with
his eyes glued to the television. "So you are still alive," she
finally said, announcing her presence.
"Yeah unfortunately," he said without even sparing her a glance. He
didn't want a lecture or anything. He just wanted to relax and get
things out of his mind. Especially this whole thing with kate. He
kept trying not to be bugged about it.
"Yes, well, thank God for small favors, huh?" Lila said with a
frown. She moved through the apartment, looking the place over and
periodically gliding her fingers over the surfaces to check for
dust. "You know, I'm thinking Cassidy might want to consider moving
somewhere a little more safe. All I had to do was tell the building
manager that I was her grandmother and was here to water her plants
and he gave me a key, no questions asked. Not exactly something I
would consider 'high security', no matter how much she pays."
Okay?" Griffin said pretty nonchalantly as he shrugged his
shoulders. He didn't really care that much about what she was
saying. Sure he wanted his sister to be safe but he was here most of
the time and he never had any problems. Plus what was so scary about
a grandmother. He'd never heard of grandmothers that murdered people.
"Well," she said, folding her arms over her chest as she stared at
the back of her grandson's head. "You're a regular barrel of
sunshine this morning, aren't you?"
"It's morning?" he rolled his eyes and finally looked back towards
her. "What do you want? You obviously didn't come over here just to
tell me how unsafe it was for Cass to be living here."
"Don't you take that tone with me, young man," Lila scolded him,
her voice very even and serious. "Now, why don't you get up off
that couch and take a shower. You smell like... Lord I don't even
want to tell you what you smell like..."
"What the fuck?" he said tuning back around. Where did she get off
telling him what to do? "I don't smell. I took a shower last night."
It wasn't like showering was the easiest thing in the world for him.
When he was with kate she helped him but at Cassidys place, it was
more then just a hassle.
"And don't you cuss at me," she reprimanded again. "You want to
cuss then you go talk to the toilet." She moved over to an empty
chair and eased her tiny body into it, resting her purse in her
lap. "Now, why are we on the pity pot this time?"
"Your not my mother so stop fucking telling me what to do." He was
tired of this and even though he probably needed her guidance he'd
never admit that. "I'm not pitying myself. I'm in a bad mood cause
of my girlfriend."
"Ah," Lila said with an understanding nod. "What happened this
time?"
"Nothing that's why. Nothing at all." He leaned back and readjusted
himself a little bit.
"So you're up here, wallowing in self-pity and drinking yourself
stupid over nothing?" she said, blatantly twisting his
words. "Well, as far as reasons go that ranks up there with some of
the dumbest I've heard."
"Shut up," he said as he shook his head. "I'm only having one beer
and I'm definitely not wallowing in self-pity." She obviously didn't
understand what he meant by nothing and she didn't know about his
girlfriend being pregnant either so who was she to say anything.
"Really?" she replied disbelievingly. "Well, then, you deserve an
award because you're giving a first rate performance. You lock
yourself in this apartment, you don't leave, you don't go outside,
you just sit there with your butt glued to the couch watching
television. Sounds like someone who's moping to me."
He decided just to ignore her comment. If she wanted to know what
was going on she couldn't be on the attack the entire time. He was
determined not to let her get to him though.
"Ah, so it's the cold-shoulder routine," she commented with a
knowing smile. "Well, then, I suppose we can sit here and just
stare at each other then. Although, I should warn you, I've raised
five children and my patience is long. I've gotten quite good at
the cold-shoulder act."
"Fine, your loss." He was quite content just sitting there watching
tv and could easily ignore that his grandmother was there. She had
to learn that he wasn't going to take that verbal abuse. He didn't
need her in his life.
"Aha!" she gloated triumphantly. "It speaks! Looks like I win."
He just shook his head and turned back to the tv. She could take
what she wanted but he wasn't giving any more.
Lila sat with Griffin for the better part of an hour in complete
silence, her eyes remaining fixed on him, watching him as he took
each drink from the bottle of beer he held in his hand. Watching
him as he flipped channels and even periodically adjusted his body
when his current position had become uncomfortable. "Do you ever
plan on leaving this apartment?" she finally asked, breaking the
long silence.
"Hmm?" he said turning towards her. "I don't know," he shrugged his
shoulders. In about a week when I get my cast off I'm moving back to
my place."
"And then...?" she asked, curious as to what he had planned once he
went back home.
"And then what?" He smiled a bit not really sure what she was
trying to get at. "I go back to having a normal life."
"Oh, so you'll be getting a job then?" she asked with a surprised
look. "Well, won't be wonderful?"
"A job?" he laughed, "No I'm not getting a job. I don't need one."
"Says who?" she challenged.
"Says my father when he gives me all this money."
"Ah, yes, about that..." Lila said, pushing herself up from the
chair and placing her purse back over her shoulder. "I'm meeting
with your father tomorrow..."
"What do you mean?" he said suddenly his attention was no longer on
the TV. If she met with his father only bad things could come from
it. "Why?"
"I'm going to ask him to cut you off," she answered plainly, as if
her reason for seeing Declan could only be obvious. "At least
temporarily, anyway."
"What?" he flipped off the TV and turned towards her. There was no
way she could do this to him. He needed that money to support Kate's
business. "Why?"
"Because I've tried everything else I know to try," Lila explained,
folding her arms across her chest. "I've tried to be supportive but
you push me away. I've tried talking to you but you don't listen.
I've tried listening to you but you don't talk. Well, now I think
it's time for a little tough love. You've convinced yourself that
you don't need anyone. If that's true, then you don't really need
your father and you don't need that monthly allowance he's seen fit
to give you for so long."
"It's not me that needs that money. My girlfriend does. She's
starting up this new business and if you take that away." He didn't
even want to think about that. Then his mind started wandering. Is
this the only reason she was still with him? "He can deposit
straight into her account. I don't care. I don't need his money, she
does."
"Then she can get a loan like everyone else," she replied, waving
off her grandson's protests. "You will get no sympathy from me,
Griffin. I have tried and tried to be there for you. I've tried to
get through to you, to make you see that there are people who care
about you. But you refuse to listen or to see it. You think by
shutting yourself off the way you have that you're not hurting
anyone else but yourself. Well, you are. You're hurting a great
many more people and what I find most disappointing is that you
don't seem to care that you're doing it. If convincing your father
to cut you off from your allowance is the only way to get through to
you, then so be it."
"You think that is going to work?" He scoffed as he finally stood
to his feet. "It won't help. I don't even think he'll do it."
Griffin had his suspicions about his parentage and had brought them
up to Declan before. This was sort of his hush money not even an
allowance really. He didn't think his father would risk that. "The
people I care about are fine." Which only included Kate and his twin
sister. He could careless about anyone else. "So just stop coming
around if I frustrate you so much. Things aren't going to change."
"We'll see," Lila answered. She turned and started for the door,
pausing as she gripped the handle. "I think you'll be surprised to
know just how convincing your father can find me to be. So, in the
mean time, I suggest you bust open the classifieds and find yourself
a job." Without another word, Lila pulled the door open, stepped
into the hall and closed it behind her, leaving Griffin alone.
