From the moment he'd gotten out of bed that morning at 3 AM, to the moment he saw his last patient, Tyler had been in a constant state of motion. He hadn't had time for breakfast and only managed to scarf down a protein bar for lunch. It never failed that the night HE was on call the women who came to their practice went into labor at the most ungodly hours. But this is what he loved about his job. It kept him constantly busy until the end of the day. He walked the last patient to the front desk and shook her hand, reassuring her again that the heartbeat sounded good and strong and he'd see her next week.
Once the patient was handed off successfully to the receptionist, Tyler retreated to his little cubby of an office to work on finishing his notes and completing the 'paperwork'. He would end up spending at least an hour finishing it up before he had to go do rounds at the hospital and check on his patients who were still there. He'd sign release paperwork there for those who could go home the following day, but for now he was closing out all of the open patient records from the day and finalizing the documentation that went with seeing patients.

Jessica Reeves knew she was cut out for this obstetrics thing. The hours were long. Her days were hectic. But at the end of the day, ninety-nine percent of her patients walked out of her office happy. A part of her was jealous that she was never able to be in their shoes. She had been pregnant twice in her life and both times didn't end on a happy note. Sure, she was still able to see her son Eli, but that situation was definitely not ideal.
She peered into Tyler's office, leaning against the open doorway. She had both hands shoved down into the pockets of her lab coat. She still had her stethoscope draped over he shoulders. "I think I heard that last patient mention something about naming her first born after you." She smirked. Their practice had a damn good reputation and Jess had to admit, that was mainly due to the charming head doctor.

Tyler looked away from the chart he was working on at Jessica standing in his doorway, "Is that right?" He was clearly amused by the announcement, "I think Kristen may have something to say about that." One thing was for certain, he had to have stamina to handle this job and it seemed that Jessica was a good fit as well. Between the two of them, they had to be on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They had worked out an agreement to alternate holidays but Tyler was careful to ensure that even if he was on call, he took some time on those special days to be with his family and be thankful that not every day was like this one. He had only just barely glimpsed his wife as he slid out of bed this morning and then again when he kissed her forehead as he left the house. He was pretty sure his kiss was greeted by a waved hand as if she were shooing a fly away.
And the rest of the day had been with patients and his staff. He'd only checked his phone a couple of times for any messages finding none, he'd settled into the reassurance that all was well at home.

Jess chuckled as she made her way into his office, taking one of the seats in front of his desk. "I think you just made her feel like having that baby while under your care is supposedly going to make this the most painless...and easy experience ever." she continued to tease as she kicked off her heels and crossed her legs. "I'm exhausted. You'd think I'd be used to this by now...but there's something about delivering a baby at dawn and working twelve straight hours afterward. I think I'll go home, eat a tv dinner, and drink a tall glass of wine."

"Careful, you make being a doctor sound so glamorous," he laughed lightly. "As soon as I finish these charts, I need to go do some rounds at the hospital and then I'll be headed home as well." He alternated his attention between her and the chart and finally signed off on it setting it aside. "It's good to work like this, you know? I mean it feels good. I'm going to be over at the free clinic tomorrow. In case you need anything...you know where I am."
He let his mind think about her statement about getting a tv dinner and he added somewhat out of the blue, "Do they still make those salisbury steak ones?! God, those use to be my favorite. I have no idea why really - I mean it obviously wasn't STEAK..."

Jessica reached up and began rubbing her temples, as if the beginnings of a headache would just magically disappear at the touch of her fingertips. "Yea, I've gotta head to the hospital first thing in the morning. There are a couple moms whom I promised could go home tomorrow. Ya know how they hate waiting all day to be released." She then had to laugh, "No salisbury steak for me. I have to say... the enchilada ones are where it's at!" Although Jessica led a very important life outside of the home...once she took her lab coat off, it was truly depressing. She'd go home, shower, heat up dinner, and catch up on her DVR shows for about an hour before hitting the bed. She really didn't do much outside of that, aside from visit the Buchanans every so often - mainly to see her 'son'. She didn't hang out with friends or go to bars. Tyler refused to allow her to come to 'poker night', insisting it was a guy's night only. So, needless to say, Jessica had an exciting night ahead of her.

"Ohh, enchiladas with the mystery meat?! Or was that cheese?" he laughed. Wow, it had been a long time since he'd had to scarf down one of those awful sodium packed non-nutrious meals, but he'd sure take his chances with it today. "I must been seriously tired or hungry if I'm thinking about getting one of those to heat up over at the hospital tonight after rounds." He sort of cringed, "I think I had better go home hungry. Otherwise there just might be hell to pay..." He finished up the last of the charts, "You be careful going home tonight and let me know if you need anything in the morning. I could write up discharge papers tonight for your patients, if you want so you don't have to go by the hospital first thing."

Jess gave him a shrug and brushed off his offer. "Stopping by the hospital in the morning just may have been the highlight of my day, Tyler, don't take it away from me." she laughed. No, really. What else was she going to do? She didn't have a family to go home to or make breakfast with. "You go home to your wife and kids and I'll lock up. I'm sure Tucker can wait a lil while longer." she added, referring to her six year old border collie.

He stood, straightening up his workspace, grabbing his favorite pen and clicking it closed then draping the stethoscope around his neck, "Sounds good. Get some rest tonight, Jess." He covered his mouth as he yawned and moved to turn off the little desk lamp he used. "Want me to walk you out?" he held the door for her, waiting to see if she was gonna go ahead and leave as well so he could set the alarm.

Jess matched his yawn as she stepped out of his office. "Yea... I gotta grab a stack off my desk." She headed down the hallway with Tyler right behind her, before ducking into her office real quick. Now holding her bag with her papers shoved down into it, she reappeared into the hall. "Guess I'll see you tomorrow."

Tyler set the alarm and opened the door for her, following her outside and then locking up. "See you tomorrow, Jess!" He walked her to her car in the small parking lot and waited till he was certain she was safe inside before he unlocked his car and headed to the hospital to do rounds. He rolled down his window, "Hey, be careful going home. Looks like we might get a storm tonight. If you need anything just give me a call."
