Before you can enter into any RPG you have to create a character. The character is like an extension of you, who you are. I've found that it's the best way to learn to role-play is you play something that has, basically, the same personality that you have. And as you get more experienced and more knowledgeable about the realm you're role-playing in then you can experiment with different personalities that are unlike you. You may find out that you don't like playing that type of character, so you retire or kill off the character and move on.
Below are the basics of the character creation. Some people like to begin with the profession of the character, some like to start with the race - go with whatever you feel comfortable with. Please, if I've missed something please tell me and I'll fix the error, I don't know everything -- by far!
CHOOSING A PROFESSION
So many professions, which one to choose? Please remember that not every character has to know how to fight. Not every character has to be one type of profession. There are millions of professions you can be. From a bartender, bargirl (server @ tables), student, historian, a scientist, journalist, bum, guardian, tutor, tinkerer, gypsy, butcher, baker, candlestick makers, and many many more.
PERSONALITY
Is your character dark-hearted, sexual, seductive? Warm hearted, loving, open and caring? Or just someone who doesn't care about anyone else and is in it for their own good?
SPECIAL ABLITIES
What can your character do? This is not a matter of making up special abilities as much as it is logically determining what abilities that character would already have. For example, maybe they are an exceptional writer or artist. Or perhaps just a very good listener. The way I base my characters are for every three good attributes that I give them, they have a ratio of one flaw.
WEAKNESSES
What are the natural weaknesses to your character? Don't just take the good things from a profession, or whatever, take the bad with it. That helps making the character so much more "human" like and more rounded. It's also an opportunity to offset a character's advantages. If you want to play a character that truly excels in singing, you may make it that that same character has a very poor social skills when it comes to talking to people around them! Remember always balance things out!
CHARACTER HISTORY
The thing that ties everything together. It'll explain why you master at something and not another thing, or why you hate others of your same race. It allows you to also determine who your character really is. You should write one up to help you know how your character works, and why. It'll help in the long run with things. Nobody else HAS to read the history. The history can be as short as a paragraph or as long as a novel (or website). You never know when a beautiful nymph or handsome paladin will ask you about your childhood, or about how you came to be in the realm.
CHOOSING A NAME
Choosing a name is one of the hardest things to do in my opinion. Choose a name you like, I often reject many names because I simply don't like the sound or look of it. When creating a character you would often see me just sitting here, everything filled out but the name. You have to choose a name that fits the overall picture of your character. Always remember that in a RPG game, someone is bound to give you a nickname to shorten your name. Make sure that you know if your name is "Aphrodite", you may be called "Aphro". Or if your name is "Fuckengravenos" you may be called.... Well you get the idea.
